As the temperature reaches above 35℃ and UK faces record temperature in the last 25 years, the British population are still finding it hard to believe the possible connection between the temperatures and climate change. While over the Thames, France’s South-Western forests burn to a crisp as European firefighters join forces to control the Fire which is now described as “an ogre, a monster”.
As the temperatures soar in UK and people trying to live amidst an ongoing water crisis and a drought, people’s disbelief in Climate Change is still intact. And amidst the soaring temperatures, while people melt in the heat, experts can’t help but make the most obvious connection between extreme weather with Climate change.
Scientists Heckled by Public
But the British population is in utter disbelief. Moreover, in the soaring heat, sweat, water shortage and drought, the British public has found its way to share their pain – trolling meteorologists with abusive comments and emails.
The BBC team has received thousands of trolling messages and tweets telling them to “get a grip”. While the population continues to be in denial, Royal Metereologist said that connecting climate change and extreme weather seems logical because it is exactly how the scientists predicted it to be.
Many people also shared their stories of the 1975 heat wave in the UK and most are optimistic that it will pass but for scientists and meteorologists, these temperatures are nothing less than a siren. While the British population fights over facts and conspiracies in the soaring heats, over by the French riviera, forests are burning to a crisp.
Firefighting in France
In the South-Western part of France, near Bordeaux, a fire of 30 km radius has disrupted the normal way of life, forcing almost 10,000 residents to evacuate from the area as the fire swallows forests and residences. Firefighters from 4 European nations have joined forces to control the fire.
The French firefighters have been fighting similar fires for almost a month now and they are exhausted. The help from the other European Nations is a necessity, French Commandant Stephanie Martin said.
According to the reports, the fire has already destroyed 7400 hectares of land and residences. Firefighters are using fire retardants and water bombs loaded in planes and helicopters in order to cover the vast expanse of the fire-affected regions.
Measures Taken By The British Government
Over by the Thames, the UK has declared prolonged dry weather status in eight regions. That has significantly affected the way of life in the UK, agriculture has taken a serious hit as half of the potato plants and even maize will not survive since there is no water for irrigation which pushes the country to the second stage – starting water rationing.
The British government has ordered its citizens and businesses not to waste water. Many water companies have banned the sale of hosepipes so that people don’t use them to wash cars. More severe restrictions may take place where they might ban the use of sprinklers used to wash vehicles and buildings.
Under public scrutiny and threats, British scientists and meteorologists are expressing their frustration as well as concerns. Many have dedicated their lives to research and science, they are interested in facts and not conspiracy theories.
Most scientists all over the world have agreed that the recent weather condition and forest fires are evidence of Climate change, and it will deteriorate even further unless the government takes steps to cut carbon emissions to as low as possible.
