As the US delegation arrives in China claimed Taiwan, Beijing has angrily responded. Amid fears of conflict in the region, China denounces the visit by former US top security officials.
Beijing has denounced a visit by a US delegation sent to the island of Taiwan by US President Joe Biden. China reacted angrily as Taiwanese president Tsai Ing-Wen declared to work more closely with Western Allies against China’s growing military threat in the world.
The US sent the delegation to the autonomous island nation claimed by China against the backdrop of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which is being closely watched in Taiwan.
On Wednesday, Wang Wenbin, spokesperson of the Chinese foreign ministry in Beijing, said, “The attempt by the US to show support to Taiwan will be in vain, no matter who the US sends.
“The Chinese people are firmly determined and resolved to defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity,” said Wenbin.
As per reports from Chinese media, similar reactions can be seen. One commenter wrote ‘It is an obvious provocation. Let’s keep calm and don’t be fooled. They are waiting for China to jump into the trap.’
What US said?
Mike Mullen, the former chairperson of the US joints chief of the staff, said that collaboration between the US and Taiwan is stronger and more expansive than ever before. Mullen is also leading the delegation in Taiwan.
“I do hope by being here with you, we can reassure you and your people, as well as our allies and partners in the region, that the United States firm behind its commitments.” Said Mike Mullen.
Taiwan’s Side
China claims Taiwan as its territory. Not even all countries in the UN accepts it as a nation. At present, Taiwan has an autonomous democratic government. The island is on alert as China can use the time of Russia Ukraine crisis to make its move to occupy the territory. However, the Taiwanese government has denied any such activity from Beijing.
China has always been against US-Taiwan relations. The Chinese military has been conducting air and naval patrols in Taiwanese straight since November after five US delegates visited president Tsai on an unannounced visit. On a routine basis, China is sending military jets into the island’s air defence identification zone.
Taiwanese president informed the delegation, “China’s military threat to the Taiwan Strait and to the region continues to rise.”
“We look forward to working even more closely with the US and other stakeholders in the region, collectively responding to the challenges and unilateral actions that could impact security, in order to maintain regional peace and stability,” said the Taiwanese president.
