Understanding Cardiac arrest: what is it?
Cardiac arrest happens when the heart suddenly and unexpectedly stops pumping. If this occurs, blood stops flowing to the brain, lungs, and other vital organs. Cardiac arrests are caused by certain types of arrhythmias that restrict the heart from pumping blood. Cardiac arrest is often deadly if appropriate steps aren’t taken immediately.
Symptoms of Cardiac arrest
Signs of cardiac arrest are immediate and can be fatal. A person may be facing cardiac arrest if they
collapse suddenly
No breathing or gasping for air
Loss of consciousness
no pulse
no response to shouting or shaking
Other signs include discomfort, chest pain, shortness of breath, heart palpitations, and weakness.
How to take action
If you guess a person suffering from a heart attack as you may see he or she cannot breathe properly, falls unconscious, or has chest discomfort, take note of what to do until first responders arrive.
-Call emergency medical help or 9-1-1
Provide cardiopulmonary Resuscitation(CPR)
Use an AED
The American Heart Association uses the letters C-A-B to help people remind order to perform the steps of CPR
C: compressions
A: airway
B: breathing
The first step is to begin compressions at least 100x/minute as hard as possible. Giving compressions to the beat of the disco classic,” staying Alive” can help to maintain rhythm.
Next, you should open the person’s airway using the head-tilt,chin-lift maneuver. Give your palm on the person’s forehead and softly tilt the head back. Again with another hand, lift the chin forward to open the airway.
The third step is rescue breathing. This includes mouth-to-mouth breathing or mouth-to-nose breathing if the mouth is seriously injured or can’t be opened. According to current recommendations, you can do rescue breathing by using a bag-mask device with a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter.
