Bengali superstar Dev to be seen as the next Byomkesh Bokshi on-screen. In his next movie ‘Byomkesh O Durgo Rahasya’ he will be seen playing the role of Bengali’s one of the most favourite fictional detectives, Byomkesh Bakshi and unravel the truth behind the mystery murders of several members of a family due to ‘snake bite’.
The Bengali industry has seen many popular actors play Byomkesh Bakshi and they have loved them all. However Dev’s approach as Byomkesh Bakshi raises questions whether he will be accepted by the audience or not.
In an interview recently Dev shared his point of view regarding this matter. He said that his love for playing different types of roles on-screen and surprising his audience with his ability inspired him to take up this challenge. He further said that he is well aware of the challenges coming his way and he is conscious about it.
When asked about the competition with other actors who have played ‘Byomkesh Bakshi’ before, he confidently said that he never sees this as a competition, rather he is his own competitor in life. Playing the role of Byomkesh will give him a new dimension in his career and he wishes his audience to see his roles differently.
The Trinamool Congress MP, Dev is also one of the producers of the film. “I am conscious of the risk, both being the actor and one of the producers. But I love taking challenges,” he said.
Bengali actors who played Bakshi
Before Dev, the Bengali audience had witnessed many other ‘Byomkesh(es)’ on-screen. Abir Chatterjee, Jissu U Sengupta, Parambrata Chatterjee, Anirban Bhattacharya, even our Bollywood star Late Sushant Singh Rajput have played ‘Byomkesh’ and have received immense love. Among these actors, Parambrata Chatterjee and Abir Chatterjee have played ‘Feluda’ as well, Bengali’s another favourite fictional character, created by Satyajit Ray.
Abir Chatterjee played Byomkesh in more than 5 movies from 2010 to 2018, while Jissu U Sengupta portrayed him in 3 films throughout 2015-2017. Late actor Sushant Singh Rajput played this role in the movie ‘Detective Byomkesh Bakshi’ in 2015 which was loved by many and Parambrata Chatterjee was seen in only 1 movie the year 2019 as Byomkesh but audiences praised his performance as well. Anirban Bhattacharya is currently seen playing Byomkesh in OTT platform Hoichoi which has gained a lot of popularity among the people.
About Byomkesh O Durgo Rahasya
The character ‘Byomkesh Bakshi’ was originally created by Saradindu Bandyopadhyay between 1930 to 1960. He had created a total of 32 detective stories with this character. ‘Byomkesh Bakshi’, who also loves to call himself ‘Satyanweshi’ is married to Satyabati and has a friend Ajitesh, who is a writer, by his side in all his adventures.
In this movie, the role of Byomkesh is played by Dev and his wife Satyabati’s character is played by Rukmini Maitra, who will also be seen pregnant in the movie. His friend ‘Ajit’ aka Ajitesh’s role will be played by Ambarish Mukherjee. The movie had its trailer launch on July 27 with the star cast as well as OTT Byomkesh Bakshi family i.e. Anirban Bhattacharya, Satyabati and director Srijit Mukherjee. The Birsa Dasgupta movie is yet to release on August 11 in west Bengal.
