On Tuesday, U.S. President Joe Biden will present new policies and funds to safeguard reproductive rights and discuss how abortion rights have been restricted ever since the Supreme Court struck down the constitutional right to an abortion.
In addition to Vice President Kamala Harris, he will be speaking at a task group conference on reproductive rights that is being held 100 days after the historic Roe v. Wade ruling.
According to a White House official and a letter released by the White House, the discussion will centre on how millions of women cannot obtain abortion services and doctors and nurses are subject to criminal consequences for delivering such services.
Jen Klein, the coordinator of the interagency task force on abortion access, wrote a letter to the president.
The president will also discuss new guidelines for universities from the Department of Education to safeguard students from pregnancy-based discrimination and $6 million in new grants from the Department of Health & Human Services to safeguard access to reproductive healthcare services during the meeting.
According to the letter from Klein, since the court reversed the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision on June 24, abortion laws have been put into place in more than a dozen states. Over 22 million women of reproductive age cannot receive abortion treatment beyond six weeks, and nearly 30 million women of reproductive age live in states that have bans.
The letter also mentions Republican senators’ attempts to enact a federal ban on abortion, including Senator Lindsay Graham.
Democrats are getting more and more optimistic that the Supreme Court ruling will increase voter turnout in the midterm elections in November.
Abortion increased dramatically in importance among Democratic voters from 46 percent in March to 71 percent, according to a Pew Research Center poll conducted in August.
Previous Friday saw a nationwide “Day Without Us” in protest of the recent Supreme Court ruling that struck down the federal constitution’s right to an abortion.
National teach-ins were being held online beginning at 11:30 a.m. ET, hosted by actress and singer Naturi Naughton, with in-person events taking place in cities such as Atlanta, Washington, D.C., New York City, Chicago, and Oakland, California. They are being organized by a group of Black women leaders.
The occasion coincided on the 46th anniversary of the Hyde Amendment, which prohibits the federal government from paying abortion services through Medicaid.
Additionally, it had happened only days before the start of the upcoming Supreme Court term. (previous Monday)
