Till July 2022, the Bihar police have arrested more than 1 lakh people for various crimes. The figures can rise to 2.70 lakh by the end of the year.
Jitendra Singh Gangwar, Additional Director General of Police (ADG), told the press that these figures might rise by the end of this year.Â
What do the Statistics say?
It was mentioned, that the number of persons arrested this year is higher than in the last two years.    Â
The figure of accused persons arrested by the Police in 2020, was 1,72,187, and in 2021, went on to 1,97,582.                                                                                                                 Â
In 2020, approximately 6,838 criminals were arrested, approximately 9,071 were arrested the following year, i.e. 2021, and over 4,900 were arrested during the current year, i.e. 2022, according to the officials.
Bihar Police also saw a rise in the seizure of illegal firearms. Over 2,500 firearms were recovered by July, and 3,951 such illegal firearms were seized the previous year, i.e. 2021. And 3,993 were found in the year 2020.
Till July 2022, the Bihar Police have recovered Rs. 31,43,150 worth of fake currency, which is said to be higher in comparison to last year (2021) – Rs. 26,32,407 and Rs. 4 lakh in 2020.
In 2020, over 18,000 illegal vehicles were recovered, and this figure saw a rise over the years, 6,505 in 2021 and 17,292 till July 2022, respectively.
Crime against women in Bihar.
The crime rate against women in Bihar has risen by 16.8% with close to 17,000 cases this year.
The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), which comes under the Home Ministry, in its annual report – “Crime in India 2021” mentioned that 1000 dowry deaths in 2021, which was the second-highest after 2,222 registered cases in Uttar Pradesh.

- 2,069 domestic violence cases were registered.
- Over 8,600 cases of kidnapping or Abduction were registered.
- Many cases under Pocso (Protection of Children from Sexual Offence) and child pornography were registered. Â
- The report suggests Bihar occupies the second spot in rioting cases with approximately 6,300 incidents and close to 7,060 victims.
- Numerous cases related to property disputes (3,336), family disputes (954), and caste conflicts (151) were registered in 2021.
- In IPC crimes, such as murders, and attempts to murder, Bihar remained number two.
Dr. Binda Singh, a Psychologist, in regards to the increase in crimes against women, said, “They get trapped by cyber criminals easily due to lack of awareness. During the lockdown, many females were mentally abused by their spouses.
On the other hand, Bihar is also witnessing a dip in crimes against senior citizens.
Crimes against senior citizens have taken a dip from 424 in 2018, to 150 in 2021.Â
According to the same report, murder cases in this category have dropped to 51%.
Experts have mentioned the state is trying to improve several crime heads under the senior citizen category.
A Sociologist, D. M. Diwakar mentioned, “Covid-19 lockdown played the key role in the decrease of crime against the elderly. The youth, who worked in different cities, came back during the lockdown, providing more security to their old parents, and helped a lot”.
