What is the Blue Cross of India (BCI)?
The BCI is an organization that promotes animal welfare and upholds charity-based events to help the animals in distress. The company is based in Chennai. When the Blue Cross of India (BCI) was mulling over bringing out its annual calendar for 2022, an animal lover and the honorary joint secretaries of BCI decided to bring together his two loves and create a calendar that would feature pencil sketches.
Blue Cross is entirely funded by voluntary donations and social service grants from various supporting organizations and help groups. Tyag Krishnamurthy started sketching in October and has not stopped ever since.
He has been appointed the task of drawing for the council of BCI, especially for the animal calendar, which includes Bornean Orangutan, Sumatran Tiger, Red Wolf, European Mink, African Forest Elephant etc., these, in particular, are the ones on the red list of IUCN’s endangered species.

Each animal selected has been pencil sketched, especially for the Blue Cross of India. one species every month has been highlighted to portray different animals in different months of the year.
Blue cross of India follows a humane and practical solution to control the population through animal birth control surgery. However, due to financial and infrastructural constraints, they can’t provide shelter and care for all the animals.
They also promote the idea of donations for thousands of sick and injured strays and abandoned pets. They provide trained experts in animal rescue and relief and ambulances on duty during the day for all emergencies.
Each month of the 2022 calendar will feature an influencer posing with one of the animals that have gone through some hardships and overcome them. Rare musical instruments are the theme of euphony 2022, the calendar brought out by Sahodaran, an LGBT support group in Chennai. “It showcases instruments such as Mizhaave.
Impact on the larger society
The Blue Cross of India firmly believes in striking a balance between the welfare of animals and humans. They thus have three dedicated programmes to impact and benefit people directly, and these are as follows:
- ABC- AR programmes- at these ABC (Animal Birth Control) centres, stary dogs from across the city are brought to get operated on ovariohysterectomy for females, castration for males – and kept five days post-op for recovery. They are vaccinated and released where there are picked up from. This initiate has had a positive impact as it helps eliminate rabies among street dogs in Chennai.
- Dr dog programme- an animal-assisted therapy session that is especially effective for children with autism and other developmental challenges.
- Ambulance services- animals severely injured or unwell are transported from the streets for free medical treatment.
