UK’s Prime Minister Boris Johnson won a Confidence vote in Parliament on Monday. He has received 211 votes in favour and 148 votes in against out of 359 votes. He faced this confidence vote because of his own Tory party members in parliament. The vote results were announced by the chair of the conservative 1922 committee, and around more than 40% of its Tory party members voted against Prime Minister Johnson.
After winning the confidence vote last night, Boris Johnson in today’s Morning Cabinet Meeting said that “we are able now to draw a line under the issues [Partygate] that our opponents want to talk about and we are able to get on talking about the issues, what the issues that I think the people want” on the issue of government spending, he said that “We as Conservative ministers, we have got to make sure at every stage that we are driving reform and driving value.” Further, he also suggests in the cabinet meeting some tax cuts in the upcoming days.
Some political analysts in Britain are claiming that this is the worst confidence vote results on a sitting Prime Minister by its own party members in recent time in Britain.
A rebel Tory member and parliament intelligence and the security committee chairman, MP Julian Lewis said that “We as Conservative ministers, we have got to make sure at every stage that we are driving reform and driving value.”
In the British parliament, only 2 Scottish Tory members out of a total of 59 Scottish MPs favoured Johnson in the Confidence Vote, as in the Scottish local election, Conservative Party had only secured third place after Scottish Labour Party.
Some Conservative Party Members readied to vote in favour of Prime Minister Johnson after a long discussion with their senior tory colleagues. Bob Seely, Tory MP from the Isle of Wight said that “On this occasion, I have supported him, but he now needs to ensure that he is 100 per cent focused on the job.”
Labour Party leader, Keir Starmer made Labour Party leader, Keir Starmer made fun of Tories divide in the Confidence vote and said that Divided “Tories propping up Boris Johnson with no plan to tackle the issues you are facing. Or a united Labour Party with a plan to fix the cost of living crisis and restore trust in politics. Labour will get Britain back on track.”
Notably that last year the guardian published a photograph of Boris Johnson and his wife with other staff members at 10 Downing street when the Uk’s cities were under strict lockdowns. After that many media reports emerged that several parties were arranged by the Conservative Party Members and Prime Minister Johnson during that period.
Last month In May, an investigation report has published which tells that around 15 events were organised between May 2020 and April 2021 at 10 Downing Street and Whitehall, report states that several of the events, were drunken and rowdy and that there were ‘failures of leadership and judgment in No 10’
