The incident happened at Brandix Intimate Ltd., a second unit to Brandix Apparel. It was previously called Quantum Seeds. The unit is located within the Special Economic Zone (SEZ) of Visakhapatnam. 18,000 of 22,000 workers in the factory are women.

According to the factory inspector, the employees inhaled the gas around 11:30. “They felt suffocated and nauseous after inhaling the gas”, said a senior police officer. The sick were taken to NTR hospital in Anakapalle and two other private hospitals in Achutapuram.
Gautam Sali, SP of Anakapalle informed the press that all the workers were stable and no deaths were reported. He said, ”The source of the gas leak is not yet confirmed”. He also said Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board (PCB) and police officials will investigate the matter.
Origin of the gas
The gas inhaled has not been identified by the police or PCB. They have suspected it of being ammonia gas. A factory spokesperson said that the gas did not emanate from the factory. This is because the units and air conditioning system doesn’t use ammonia. He/she stated it might have come from other units located close to the Special Economic Zone (SEZ).
The investigating authorities are guessing that the gas was carried by wind to the Brandix unit. Some suspected the Porus Lab Factory was located 1.5 km away from the site of the anomaly. The factory inspector of Brandix disagreed as he stated that “Porus does not use ammonia.”
He also stated,” The other unit close by is the effluent treatment plant one km away from Brandix. The ETP will have a mix of all gasses.”
CM YS Jagan Reddy asked officials to look after the sick and hospitalized and asked the local leader to report to the scene. He also said that measures would be taken to prevent such incidents in the future.
