Lula received 50.9% of the vote in a tumultuous election in which two enmities from opposing ideologies contested.
In a surprise comeback for the leftist candidate, former Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva defeated incumbent Jair Bolsonaro on October 30. This signalled the end of the nation’s most right-wing administration in decades.
The victory of Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva over incumbent far-right Jair Bolsonaro in the presidential race marked a shift to the left for Brazil.
Born into poverty, Mr Lula was a former union leader who in the 1970s spearheaded strikes against Brazil’s military regime. A commodity-driven economic boom characterised his two tenures in office as president, and he vacated with a record level of support.
However, his Workers Party was eventually tarnished by a severe recession and a corruption scandal that set new records and resulted in a 19-month prison sentence for bribery charges that were later reversed by the Supreme Court last year. He had been convicted of receiving a bribe from a Brazilian construction company in trade for contracts with Petrobras, the country’s state-owned oil giant.
For a politician who was incarcerated and restricted from running in the 2018 presidential election, it is an astounding comeback.
After his conviction was overturned and he was permitted to leave prison after 580 days, Lula immersed himself in politics again.
He began his victory speech by saying, “They wanted to bury me alive and here I am.
Following a contentious election campaign, Lula called for “peace and unity” in his victory speech. He declared that he will speak for all Brazilians, not just his supporters.
Lula went on to say, “It is in no one’s interest to live in a divided nation in a permanent state of war. This country needs peace and unity. This population doesn’t want to fight anymore.” ”
While Bolsonaro was favoured in the southeast’s economic powerhouses of Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, Lula easily won the northeastern states of Brazil.
