Rating: 3.5/5
The Netflix’s ‘Bridgerton’ Season 2 is far in love-making and focuses more on substance for this romance saga.
The first season of “Bridgerton” was sweet and scented with romance, whereas Season 2 has a savory of its own with Jonathan Bailey as Viscount Anthony Bridgerton and Simone Ashley as Kate Sharma.
Daphne Bridgerton (Phoebe Dynevor) and Simon Basset (Rege-Jean Page) were seen drawn to each other in season 1, which captured the very nature of embracing love. The second season sees the eldest siblings of Bridgerton’s and Sharma’s taking the center stage of the show. The show explores love triangles and family responsibilities as burdens in their way of finding love.
Watch Trailer:
The Viscount declares himself to be the eligible bachelor who is on the search for a suitable wife— fit to fulfil the role of Viscountess — the one who has wit, family drive and can carry his heir. With his top interest in finding a match without love, he starts courting Kate’s younger sister, Miss Edwina Sharma (Chaithra Chandran).
Miss Edwina, titled “Diamond of the Season” by Her Majesty the Queen, soon grabs the attention of the Viscount. But in order to court Edwina, Anthony must first impress her elder sibling, Kate. Their unlikeliness towards each other turns into their desire for each other.
The suppressed desires of Anthony and Kate that burn them from within turn into a slow-burn as they finally confess their love for each other in the season’s last episode. While Daphne makes few appearances this season, Simon has no presence to speak of.
Other than these two characters sharing significant space in the series, Edwina makes an important decision regarding her marriage in order to find love over being wed. The Bridgerton storyline also focuses on Eloise Bridgerton (Claudia Jessie), who is particularly interested in revealing the identity of Lady Whistledown.
She is a woman who questions society and their norms, how women are courted and makes it a purpose of life. On the other hand, Penelope Featherington/Lady Whistledown (Nicola Coughlan) becomes ambitious and powerful with words after the unsuccessful Whistledown chase hunt last season.
The season may have found a tough time convincing audiences with this story, but one must focus on the point this season has to offer, and that is, it is not easy to find love and definitely not easier to accept what “you” want, keeping aside your duties and responsibilities. Chris Van Dusen has made a great effort to create substance rather than just scripting sex scenes.
Although it made us believe that the season had much more to offer, the regency era portrays the characters of Sharma’s sisters really well, especially Kate Sharma. Her character was sharp and wise, someone who cares and sacrifices. The elements of Indian culture with Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham music were some of the sweetest moments of Sharma’s portrayal.
The direction of the film is good, with aesthetically pleasing cinematography and a good screenplay. With a great playlist including Harry Styles, Miley Cyrus, and others, the season is definitely worth a watch.
Dear Readers, Bridgerton Season 2 was all about differences, duties, courage, love, and acceptance. And with Lady Whistledown closing with another beginning to the chapter, season 3 will be much awaited with better storytelling and characters. Netflix’s original is now streaming, directed by Chris Van Dusen and produced by Shondaland.
