It should be emphasised that the BJP, which was in power at the time, controlled all 11 seats, but only seven were kept. The saffron party suffered defeats in the constituency of Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia and in Narendra Singh Tomar’s stronghold of Chambal.
Despite winning three seats, the Congress lost in Bhopal, the hometown of its senior leader and former chief minister of Madhya Pradesh, Digvijaya Singh. But in the Chhindwara district of Kamal Nath, it won.
Eleven of the 16 seats up for election as mayors have had their results made public. On July 20, the results for the final five seats, which underwent a second round of voting, will be announced.
