As reported by state broadcaster CCTV, a China Eastern Airlines Boeing 737 crashed with 133 onboard in Southwest China.
As of Monday, there was no information on any casualties in the incident. Rescue teams were dispatched to the scene, and the wreck “caused a mountain fire,” as per CCTV. There was no word on the cause of the crash.
The American airliner crashed while on a flight from the city of Kunming to Guangzhou, as told by China’s Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC). It crashed in the outskirts of Wuzhou city in the region of Guangxi.
The passenger jet was identified as a 6-year-old Boeing 737-800 by flight-tracking website Flightradar24.
The China Eastern flight MU5735 was due to land at 3:05 pm (0705 GMT), but tracking ended at 2:22 pm (0622 GMT) at an altitude of 3225 feet and a speed of 376 knots.
The flight had not reached its scheduled destination in Guangzhou after taking off from Kunming at 1:11 pm (0511 GMT), as told by airport staff and reported by local media.
In the past decade, the safety record of Chinese airlines has been amongst the best in the world.
The last fatal commercial aircraft accident on Chinese soil was in 2010. 44 of 96 people on board were killed in a Henan Airlines Embraer E-190 regional jet that was landing at Yichun airport in low visibility.
