Who will be the next president of Congress? Rahul, Sonia, or anyone else?
“On the issue of the Congress President, there is a situation of confusion within the party. Rahul Gandhi is neither saying “yes” nor “no” at the moment. Meanwhile, top Congress leaders are brainstorming all the options. If Rahul Gandhi is not ready, then Sonia can be asked to take over the reins of the party till the next election”
The time for the election of Congress President is drawing near
With this, a big question has arisen in front of the Congress if Rahul Gandhi is not ready to take charge again, then who will be crowned? Party sources say that there is a churning going on inside the Congress regarding all the options.
At present, two options are visible – one, if Rahul Gandhi is not ready, then a trusted leader of the Gandhi family should be given the command and the second option is that Sonia Gandhi should be asked to keep the responsibility of the post of Speaker till the next Lok Sabha elections.
As per the pre-decided schedule, the process of election of Congress President is to start on August 21 and it is to be completed by September 20. On the other hand, Congress’s Central Election Authority chief, Madhusudan Mistry, told ‘PTI-Bhasha’, “The list of delegates is ready for voting.”
From our side we are ready. The Congress Working Committee has to decide the date of the election. After the defeat of the Congress in the last Lok Sabha elections, Rahul Gandhi resigned from the post of President taking moral responsibility and since then Sonia Gandhi has been playing the responsibility of the interim President of the party.
Party sources say that most Congress leaders, including Sonia Gandhi, are of the opinion that, in view of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Rahul Gandhi should take over as the president. But till now, the consent of Rahul Gandhi has not come out on this issue.
A Congress leader told ‘PTI-Bhasha’, “There is no doubt that most leaders and workers have the same feeling that Rahul Gandhi should become the president. But for this, it is necessary that he himself is ready. To the best of my knowledge, there is currently no indication that Rahul Gandhi is ready to take over as the President.
He said, “After the Congress’s defeat in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, when Rahul left the president’s post taking moral responsibility, on many occasions, party leaders have urged him to become the president again, but on his behalf. There was no answer to ‘yes’. Now the direction of the election of the president depends on his ‘yes and no.
The Congress leader said, “Even if someone other than the Gandhi family becomes the president, then even in such a situation, Rahul Gandhi will continue to be a prominent face of the party.
A Congress source said, “The name of Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot is prominent among the alternative names that are being discussed in the event of Rahul Gandhi not becoming the president. The Gandhi family hardly has any objection to his name. It is also being said that Gehlot does not appear to be willing to leave the chief minister’s post and assume the responsibility of the president.
