According to sources, India’s first wholly indigenous Emergency Approval of Covaxin for Kids, has been formally licensed as one of the first COVID-19 vaccinations for children in India after authorities granted emergency use authorization.
According to sources, the SEC (Subject Expert Committee) has recommended that the Emergency Approval of Covaxin for Kids, with the DGCI reviewing the recommendation.
“After extensive discussion, the committee recommended that the vaccine be granted market authorization for the age category of 2 to 18 years for restricted use in an emergency circumstance,” according to SEC statements.
Covaxin has been approved for use in adults. While the vaccine is still undergoing further clinical trials, the developers have started their clinical trials at select AIIMS centers across the country to evaluate the efficiency of the vaccine on kids in younger groups, with a whopping 71 % effectiveness against the SARS-COV-2 virus and its variants. When the vaccine is ready for use in the pediatric and adolescent population has yet to be determined.
What Means of Emergency Approval of Covaxin for Kids only
Only emergency use authorization for Covaxin has been given, not full access. After examining clinical trials and lab-based evidence, authorities approve the help of some vaccinations and medications in the event of a life-threatening emergency (such as COVID).
While Covaxin is currently in the last stages of testing, the requisite EUA has been obtained based on a risk-benefit analysis. Most other vaccinations, including those developed by Moderna and Pfizer for children, have been promoted in the same way.
While Covaxin is still being tested, it has been discovered that the vaccine has high efficiency and antibody protection in children, just as it does in adults.
As a result, ago has been given based on global criteria, and clinical data has been thoroughly evaluated.
However, because it is still a vaccine that has received approval without completing all rounds of testing, the producers of Covaxin have been urged to adhere to specific guidelines to meet the criteria.
Emergency approval is a significant step for kids before the third wave
The third wave of coronavirus, predicted to grow any time after the holiday season, is thought to represent a significant concern to children. Numerous studies forecast a spike in pediatric cases when cases peak and schools have also opened their doors. Of course, the situation is made more dangerous because children in India did not have access to any officially available vaccine until October 12.
While the permission and ready availability of Covaxin resources make the procedure go more smoothly, there is still no official word on when children will be immunized. According to sources, more action and approvals for children’s vaccinations could be expected in the following week or two.
What are Other Vaccines for Kids
While Covaxin is the first vaccination to be licensed for pediatric usage, numerous additional vaccines are being developed to protect India’s most vulnerable youngsters.
Zydus Cadila’s needle-free DNA vaccine, ZyCOV-D, is one such vaccination that has received selective approval for use in children over the age of 12.
However, studies are still ongoing, and the vaccine may not see the light of day for some time.
Corbevex and Covovax are two more vaccine options being studied for pediatric usage.
Both vaccinations have been granted the go-light to undertake mid-stage studies on children aged 7 to 14.
A sign of Hope for Kids and parents
For parents and educational institutions, the beginning of vaccination efforts for children is a huge relief.
However, it’s unclear how long the wait will be and whether or not children would require different dosage schedules and patterns than adults.
Pharma firms that have been granted emergency-use authorization are awaiting more instructions on how to proceed with vaccinations for children and information on potential adverse effects and the total dosages that will be made available.
