Rafael Nadal won’t play in the Davis Cup group round after being left off of the Spain team’s roster on Monday.
Rafael Nadal will miss the Davis Cup group round next month. He has not been selected for the Spain team on Monday. Alexander Zverev will be leading the German team.Â
The 36-year-old Nadal has 22 Grand Slam singles victories, which is a record for men. He won the Australian Open and the French Open earlier this year. He was set to play Nick Kyrgios in the Wimbledon semifinal, however he was forced to withdraw due to an abdominal injury.
Nadal will not play in the Davis Cup for the first time since Spain won the competition for the fifth time in 2019. Though he is making his comeback this week at the Cincinnati Masters in preparation for the US Open. The 16-team tournament might be Djokovic’s first match since winning his seventh Wimbledon championship and 21st Grand Slam last month.
The young star Carlos Alcaraz will serve as Spain’s motivation instead.
The Davis Cup
In the Group Stage of the Davis Cup Finals 2022, 16 teams will compete against one another. The four host European cities are Bologna, Valencia, Hamburg, and Glasgow. The competition starts on September 13 and ends on September 18. Numerous great athletes from all around the world will compete at the Davis Cup finals. Nadal and Kyrgios are absent from the competition.
In Group B which will take place in Valencia, Sergi Bruguera’s side will compete against Canada, Serbia, and South Korea.
The top two finishers in each of the four groups will advance to the knockout round in November at Malaga.
On the other hand, Serbia’s team includes the 21-time Grand Slam winner Novak Djokovic. The Serb missed last week’s Montreal Masters because of his unwillingness to be vaccinated against Covid-19. He has now withdrawn from the US Open warm-up in Cincinnati. He is still hoping to compete in the year’s last major at Flushing Meadows.
Zverev has not played since June, when he suffered a horrific ankle injury in his Roland Garros semi-final against Nadal. The world number two, on the other hand, will play on home soil in Hamburg in Group C.
Andy Murray will represent Great Britain against Kazakhstan, the United States, and the Netherlands in Glasgow.
