The Walking Dead: Dead City’s first season premiered on the 18th of June, after the premiere, it exceeded everyone’s expectations. With the original Walking Dead series wrapped up and still barely cold in the ground, the Walking dead franchise continues with Dead City, featuring the two major characters from the original series, Maggie and Negan. This is the first time, characters from the main series have been given the spotlight. However, originally, the fans were skeptical about how the series would turn out because the main series of the franchise was criticized for being unnecessarily stretched out.
Breaking Records
Dead City became the biggest premiere ever on AMC Plus, where it was released. It also became the most watched new drama series of the year.
Dead city might be the first indication that the legacy of the original Walking Dead series may be held by this, however it is unlikely that this series would hold up in the long-run.
What’s in this new sequel?                     Â
The very unlikely duo teams up for a six-episode mission which takes place in a zombie-ravaged Manhattan, New York that happens about fifteen years after the Zombie Apocalypse shown in the original series. They form this alliance to save Maggie’s son who was kidnapped.  There is a noticeable change in the setting of this series compared to the original series as this starts in the outskirts of a major US city whereas the original show mostly covered bland nondescript areas of Georgia. Dead city takes the audience beyond the same forests of Georgia. This was hugely
welcomed by critics. The New York setting also brings a whole new approach to fighting the zombies which includes ziplining through Skyscrapers, using Sewers to move etc.
Its easily understood why Maggie and Negan was chosen for this new spinoff ad their dynamic was one of the interesting aspects of the previous series. Both the actors of the characters, Lauren Cohan and Jeffrey Dean are said to be brilliant throughout the series as even if they know their characters inside out, there’s always more nuances to be found in their characters.
Reviews and Ratings.
The series has debuted with a very impressive Rotten Tomatoes score. Rotten Tomatoes have gathered enough reviews to core this series an 83%.
There were other spinoffs of the series in the past as well. Namely, Tale of Walking Dead, Fear the Walking Dead and The Walking Dead: World beyond.
Fear the Walking Dead has been running since 2015 which proves the ability of the Walking Dead Franchise to mount a successful franchise but the World Beyond spinoff only lasted for two seasons. But Dead City may prove that the fate of that World Beyond series was merely a blip.
The Dead City is the opening act to a broader universe as there are more series to follow it which will include Rick Grimes and Michonne. The other series will include Daryl Dixon. But the Dead city is likely to form the spine of the series going forward.
