Deepika Padukone describes working on Shakun Batra’s set for Gehraiyaan as “exhausting.”

, which will be available on Amazon Prime Video. This is her first collaboration with the filmmaker. Deepika Padukone, who has worked with Sanjay Leela Bhansali on three of his films, spoke with Anupama Chopra about how Shakun’s working method is so different from SLB’s. She even went so far as to say that anyone who has worked on a Shankun Batra set is competent enough to enter SLB’s cinematic universe. 

We tell him, or I’ve started telling him, that if he works with Shakun Batra, he can work on a Sanjay Leela Bhansali film because he’s not pleased. I’m joking about the moaning, but I admire his method because it’s so exhausting.

“Actors are on their feet the entire time, save for lunch break,” Deepika remarked, adding that the entire process was highly ‘nimble,’ which pushed her to know her lines so well that last-minute changes in the scene or director’s direction wouldn’t catch her off guard.

She also mentioned that with Sanjay or Shankun, she had the freedom to make script modifications. “I modify my monologues with a pencil.” That does not sit well with specific authors.

They are kind of enamoured with the conversations they compose. Nothing can be changed. Take, for example, Kabir. As long as you grasp the essence, Shakun or Sanjay are happy to make the conversations your own.

They’re interested in the scene’s core and emotion, as well as the message it’s trying to convey. So I make a note of the pieces that don’t sit well with me or don’t feel natural… and I write on the side,” she explained.

Gehraiyaan, which also stars Ananya Panday, Dhairya Karwa and Siddhant Chaturvedi, will stream on Amazon Prime Video from February 11 onwards.
