Delhi Crime is a web series that is based on the Nirbhaya case. The gruesome and horrific nation that shook the entire nation took place in 2012. Delhi crime was the medium of telling us how the investigation was carried out for the girl who was raped in a moving bus. Delhi crime is available in 2 seasons on Netflix. The web series is directed and created by Richie Mehta, Lawrence Bowen, and Toby Bruce.
So far, Delhi crime has proved to be one of the darkest and most disturbing web series. Both the seasons and episodes will leave you numb. All the episodes will give detailed information about how the victim’s naked body was found at 2 am, how the investigation started and how the judgment was passed. All of the episodes were shot from only 1 perspective, that is, the Delhi police’s perspective.
The struggles, challenges, and physical, and mental challenges are shown in a very intricate manner. There were also scenes which were really very disturbing. Director made sure that the web series is raw and blunt. Right from the doctor telling the condition of Nirbhaya to the judge directly coming to record Nirbhaya’s confession. This itself makes it the most eye-opener web series ever made. The web series also shows how the media was told not to bring them in limelight in spite of the DPS refusing the media to do so.
Though Delhi crime is a crime drama, the emotions, and sensitivity are very intense. This makes it one of the finest web series ever made in India. The web series- Delhi crime has been nominated for International Emmy awards. If season 1 was about the crime and chasing the criminals then season 2 is all about how the team solved the case. Season 1 will make one numb. It accurately shows what and how the crime was committed. It makes one think about how people can be so inhuman and brutal. In Season 2, the police gang chases the kaccha baniyan gang who were known for committing murders and robberies in the Northern belt of India throughout the 80s and 90s.
Delhi crime is definitely not a cat-mouse chase. The opening scene where the victims are lying down on the road will itself make one shocked. In the initial stage, one may feel that it is a fast-paced series. A few episodes into the series, one may definitely feel that the rawness of the web series is the best part of it. The lead role, supporting role, and other roles gave their best performance. The series was much needed for the people who should see how the police worked tirelessly to catch all 6 culprits. We are modernized now and it is really shameful that many people are still shallow-minded and not at all trying to be open-minded in the first place.
As much as this series is difficult to express in words, the more difficult it is to see it with our eyes. One can imagine the person who actually experienced this. Not only 1 but many people were affected due to this. The good part is that Delhi crime is one of the best crime web series made where it showed the law enforcement, how the judicial proceeding took place, and how a juvenile (16-year-old boy) was released just because he was under 18. All the characters performed excellently.
Another plus point of the web series is that it perfectly covered the way the judiciary uses “jugad” to get away with everything. The web series is not melodramatic, over-the-top, or exaggerated. The respective families are also covered. The way they dealt with the ongoing situation, their sufferings, etc
The character played by Shefali Shah was inspired by real-life IPS officer Chhaya Sharma. Her performance was commendable throughout the web series. Looking at her performance, one could feel that the real investigation is going on in front of your eyes. The other actors who played other roles made the web series very much real. The cinematography and writing were on the top level. Despite some minor facts being distorted to whitewash the Delhi government, the web series manages to give a remarkable stamp on the minds of the people. Laws were undone but the crime committed against a woman couldn’t be undone.
This is a must-watch web series on Netflix. One will feel very emotional at the end of the series
