Amidst the vigorous push from the Indian Government to promote electric vehicles’ sales and manufacturing, Delhi is becoming the biggest hub of EVs, with a record of 5,000 new e-vehicles getting registered every month. Not only that, it is also paying attention to constructing an infrastructure that supports these Vehicles.
Delhi Transco Limited to develop EV infrastructure
Partnering up with Delhi Transco Limited (DTL), the Delhi government will install 140 new Charging points and 48 battery swapping facilities at 42 new locations. This public-private partnership is going to bring the cheapest charging points, costing at just Rs. 3 per unit.
Electricity at other stations owned by private and other government agencies charge around 9-10 Rs. per unit. This cost was also considered economical but DTL is charging a third of even those charges.
A few of the most benefited locations include the parking of -Kashmere Gate, Vishwavidhalaya, Uttam Nagar East and West, Janakpuri East, Shadipur, Rajendra Place, Dwaraka, Dwarka sector-11, Supreme Garden, Dilshad Garden, Kalkaji Mandir, Mayur Vihar Extension, Qutub Minar. Netaji Subhash Place, Rohini sector 18 and 19 metro stations.Â
The officials said that these locations were chosen keeping in mind the people of Delhi to make it easier for them to access these charging points.
Including the new charging points, DTL will run a total of 173 charging points and 62 battery swapping points that will be available at 53 locations. According to Delhi officials, a total of 893 Ev charging points and 103 battery swapping points by DTL tender are under construction.
Of the currently functional 173 charging points installed, 118 are slow charging points (3.3 kw/7.5kw), 32 are medium/moderate charging points (15-22kw) and 23 are fast charging points(>22kw).
Install a Private EV charging point with Switch Delhi
Delhi has always been at the forefront of promoting and supporting EV adoption. It has also paid attention to the development of infrastructure to support Electric Vehicles, and to develop confidence in people to switch to an EV.
It has also started an initiative where consumers can get a private EV charging point installed at their homes, group housing societies, multi-storey apartment complexes, RWA offices and shopping complexes. One only has to go to an online portal called Switch Delhi and get a disco-empanelled vendor.Â
It is an online single-window portal that can perform activities apart from the one mentioned above. Consumers can get credible information about electric vehicles, their benefits, and Dealers selling EVs. They can also locate their nearest charging stations and do a search about the Electric vehicles available in the market and which will suit them.
Delhi drives towards a Pollution-free City
Delhi has always been one of India’s most polluted city. Its air quality is well beyond dangerous and is quite severe. Many people living in the city for a long period also show symptoms of respiratory problems.
As the capital of India, it is one of the most advanced cities in the country and deserves the title of the capital. To make this capital even better, the government is making conscientious efforts to restore its air quality to an acceptable degree. To do so, they have been pushing for the electric shift the most in all of the country.
The current result is that over 2.2 lakh Electric vehicles have been registered in Delhi. The majority of these EVs are two-wheelers, followed by 3-wheelers and then 4-wheelers. Delhi has been offering subsidies for buying electric vehicles since August 2020. This has certainly helped as nearly 1.3 lakh EVs were purchased after the launch of the subsidy.
Delhi also aims to make Electric vehicle sales occupy 25% of the total automobile sales market by 2024. Following this ambition, they are taking multiple steps to promote electric vehicles among the people and raising awareness about the benefits of driving an EV, both environmentally and economical.
