The Court took cognizance of the issue after an article was published in the Times of India suggesting that monsoon water is not harvested properly in Delhi.
The Delhi High Court has taken suo moto notice of the lack of rainwater collection in the nation’s capital and the monsoon-related traffic jams caused by flooded roadways.
Justices Jasmeet Singh and Dinesh Kumar Sharma issued a notice to the Central government, the Delhi government, the Public Works Department (PWD), the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), and other agencies, requiring them to file their status updates on the matter.
The authorities must explain the efforts they have taken to conserve and collect rainfall and reduce monsoon-related traffic congestion.
The Court will now consider this case on July 4.
The judges considered the problem after reading about it in The Times of India.
The article suggested that Delhi is not adequately harvesting monsoon rainwater.
“In addition, we take note of the fact that, during the monsoon season and otherwise, there are massive traffic jams in Delhi, which, according to us, can be easily managed and regulated by rain water management and Google Maps, which displays traffic congestion in various sections of Delhi. We take suo moto notice since this is a matter of public concern “the court’s order stated.
Anuj Aggarwal and Ayushi Bansal represented GNCTD, PWD, Delhi Police, Delhi Traffic Police, and the Flood and Irrigation Department.
Vikrant N. Goyal and Tarveen Singh Nanda represented the Delhi Cantonment Board in court.
