The Northwest District of Delhi launched an initiative in July, wherein an all women beat at each police station was to patrol the streets. The attempt turns out to be a success, according to Delhi cops.
TEJASWINI: A Women Centric Safety & Empowerment Initiative launched by Delhi Police in the Northwest District on July 10.
The intent behind the launch of the initiative, ‘Tejaswini’, was to stimulate the women and other citizens in the northwest district of the state about offences against women such as rape, sexual assault, domestic, child abuse, persecution for dowry etc.
The initial motive was to make the citizens cautious of the surroundings and aid them to cope with the situation.
The gambit was fueled by a robust management system covering special services like counselling, meditation, self-defence tactics and training.
According to the cops, 46 special lady constables were assigned to the crime-prone and sensitive cuffs, including Jhuggi Jhopdi clusters of Jahangirpuri, Shakurpur, Pitampura residential areas, Bhalaswa village, market and mall complexes, schools & colleges and metro stations.
Impact of the initiative noted in the last three months
The women police officers are seen playing a critical function in fighting back crime against women in Delhi’s northwest district.
The reports say that the allocated team has solved 116 cases and arrested 137 criminals in the area in the last three months. The city police reaffirmed the same in a statement given to the media.
An official statement issued by the city police said that the errands and responsibilities outranged by the allotted team had engendered a notable improvement in terms of its reach and scope of tasks over the past three months.
The drive has shown commendable growth and development in the area, including the assistance of 243 senior citizens and women and 13 self-defence camps for the school and college girls.
Depletion of 23% in the number of street PCR calls is witnessed, whereas the women related PCR calls reduced by nearly 31%.
The unsung heroes of the enterprise
Usha Rangnani, DCP of the northwest district of the city, gave details on the roles and duties of the special team.
The constables provide the ‘at the doorstep policing’ to recognise the tormented and requisite situations and compensate the injustice with the required action within the community.
DCP also mentioned that these women constables function all their duties with utmost zeal alongside their male equivalents.
They also carry out thorough and well-established patrols on ERVs, motorcycles, QRTs, and scooters to safeguard the women in the vicinity. The women feel more confident and empowered.
A woman constable from the Bharat Nagar police station evolved as an awe-inspiring figure for the courageous women after she hunted and confined a snatcher independently during her patrol in the area.
The women constable Kiran is now addressed as “Asha ki Kiran” by the people.
The residents feel safer and more confident now. The early hesitation in reporting the crime against women has also reduced, and almost all the domestic violence or molestation related cases are reported to the women constables.
Better counselling and doorstep policing have eased the hardships and have yielded positive feedback and results.
The review meetings, interactions and several open house sessions were held with the relatives and constables to get feedback on the initiative and keep track of the ground actualities.
Regular feedbacks and intensive superintendence by the DCP have brought sharp improvements in law and order of the city.
