Authorities are ordered to keep a close watch on public gatherings as the state government witnesses a spike in Delhi covid cases.
After a steady fall in the number of cases, the government reported a surge in covid cases in Delhi. The rise in new, positive cases in the national capital has crossed 1,000 on Wednesday. However, only one death has been recorded in the past twenty-four hours.
With this, the active Covid cases in Delhi stands at 2,641 while the positivity rate has gone up to 5.70 percent. According to the state health department, this was the maximum number of cases reported in Delhi since February. The latest report of the national capital says that the health department logged 632 cases on Tuesday and 501 cases on Monday.
Given the spurt in covid cases in Delhi, the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) has made it mandatory for the public to wear masks again and imposed a fine of Rs.500 in case of violation of rules. Authorities have also been directed to start aggressive testing across the city. A total of 17,701 tests were conducted in the city.
Experts believe that the rise in covid cases in Delhi is a result of people not following appropriate Covid norms. As a result, officials are ordered to keep a close watch on social gatherings and ensure proper implementation of steps to tackle the spread of the virus and hospitalization of patients in the near future.
During the meeting conducted by DDMA, experts suggested not to shut down schools as it has hampered the student’s well-being and educational future. Authorities of the state government should develop Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to handle the rising covid cases in Delhi. The DDMA meeting was chaired by Baijal, the chief minister of Delhi, Arvind Kejriwal, Deputy CM Manish Sisodia, and other experts and government officials.
In an interview with Firstpost, many major trading associations, including those at the Connaught Place, Lajpat Nagar, South Extension, Karol Bagh, and wholesale dealer’s associations from Sadar Bazar and Chandini Chowk, stressed that government should consult with them before imposing strict restrictions if there is a steady rise in covid cases in Delhi.
Covid cases in Delhi accounted for 30% of the new cases reported in India. As a result, the state government has started collecting all Covid infected patented samples to ascertain if a new variant, such as the ‘XE’ variant first reported in Mumbai, has spread in the national capital.
