New Delhi: After successfully holding first Sherpa meeting under India’s G20 presidency in Udaipur, India is set to host the G20 delegates from December 13-16 for first development working group meeting in Mumbai.
India’s G20 Sherpa Amitabh Kant said that India’s vision for the Development Working Group’s meeting will be to share India’s Human-Centric Sustainable Development Goal’s Story and Citizen centric governance. He said, during this meeting India will focus on utilizing power of digital technology and data as key enabler.
What is Development Working Group?
At the G20 Toronto Summit in 2010, the Leaders of countries agreed to establish G20 Development Working Group (DWG) with a mandate to lead the implementation of the Group’s development agenda. The DWG focuses its work on narrowing the development gap and reducing poverty as integrals to G20 broader objective of achieving strong, sustainable, and balanced growth and ensuring a more robust and resilient global economy for all.
Development Working Group has defined the following 6 principles:
1.Focus on economic growth
2.Global development partnership
3. Global or regional systemic issues
4. Private sector participation
5. Complementarity
6. Outcome orientation
DWG meeting in Mumbai
On December 13, 2022, the Indian Presidency will conduct two side events on ‘Data for Development: Role of G20 in advancing the 2030 Agenda’ and ‘Infusing new LiFE into Green Development’ before the commencement of official meeting of DWG. The delegates will be served dinner at Taj Mahal Palace. Indian government’s focus also remains on exhibiting Maharashtra’s pride and culture through this meeting.
India’s Sherpa Amitabh Kant mentioned the importance of SDGs during India’s G20 presidency as 2024 marks the midpoint of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted in 2015. Review of SDGs progress and G20’s efforts to achieve the SDGs targets would be discussed at the DWG meeting.
G20 countries
The G20 comprises of Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, Turkey, the UK and the US, as well as the European Union. The presidency of G20 changes every year. India will host main G20 summit in New Delhi next year. Brazil will host G20 summit in 2024 .
India’s G20 presidency will go on till November 30, 2024. The theme of India’s G20 Presidency is ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ – ‘One Earth One Family One Future’. It will host over 200 meetings in over 50 cities.
