Just a few days after the music video of the song “Pasoori Nu” from the movie “Satyaprem ki Katha” was released, the famous Pakistani dancer, “Sheema”, who danced in the song, has expressed her opposition to remakes or remake culture, even though they are introducing the old songs to the younger generation.
In her words, she said, “I don’t want to do any remakes of old songs,” she said. “My song ‘Pasoori’, which is one of the most famous in Pakistan, was recently remixed for the movie ‘Satyaprem’ Ki Katha” starring Kartik Anand and Kiara Advani.
Pasoori Nu has been sung by Arijit Singh, Tulsi Kumar, and Ali Sethi. The lyrics of the song have been composed by Gurpreet Singh and Ali Sethi, while the music has been composed by Rohit Kohli. The composition of the song was conducted by Ali Sethi, and the vocals were provided by Shae Gill.
Sheema Kermani’s Views on Remake Culture
Sheema is a highly acclaimed Pakistani dancer and social activist, renowned for her proficiency in Bharatanatyam and other forms of dance. She is the founding member of Tehrik e-Niswan (Women’s Movement), and advocates for the preservation of cultural heritage, the rights of women, and the promotion of peace.
Sheema Kermani has said that she did not watch the new song pasoori nu. However, she has questioned the reason behind remaking a song that is already beautiful. She believes that the original song is always better. She said in an interview to Aaj Tak that she does not like remakes much. She also said that the good thing is that youngsters are listening to old iconic songs, which is a good thing, but she is against remakes.
What is Remake Culture?
Remake is a very commonly used word of day-to-day life. Due to the presence of this work we often get a chance to do the same work in a more effective way. But sometimes this effectivity changes into negativity.
Going to the detail, If I could single out one defining characteristic of American culture in the last ten years, it would probably be reproduction: the representative form of our era is a rework.
What is a rework? We can define a rework as a cultural work too due to it’s spontaneous presence in our society. It is loosely based on a pre-existing work of fiction or legend, that
rewrites the characters, plots, situations, or structures of the original, often in the pursuit of familiarity.
However there have always been some connection between the song of Pakistan and Bollywood.
Criticism of Pasuri nu: Remake of Original Pasoori
The makers of the song ‘Pasoori Nu’ said that the hate they have received for their recreated version of the song is something they were already expecting. “We can’t prevent any kind of reaction,” Rochak Kholi said. “Even before we recreated the song, Ali and Arijit anticipated these reactions because it’s like messing with something that’s already been done really well, so the first reactions were just based on the idea that we were remaking the song. Most people didn’t even know we were remaking it. We released it on Monday morning and got a lot of hate. But now that people are hearing it, they’re turning positive and saying it’s not as bad as we thought it would be.”
After the song was released, Shae Gill said on Instagram Stories that she didn’t want anyone to send hate to anyone else. “Don’t listen to it if you don’t like it,” she said. “Just think of it as a rendition instead of a remake. Maybe that will help.”
