After being placed in numerous depositions over the years, the former US President fought to avoid testimony. Mr. Donald Trump was again called by the District attorney for questioning in which he denied answering questions by invoking the Fifth Amendment rights.
In a post-deposition statement the Former President said “Under the advice of my counsel and for all of the above reasons, I declined to answer the questions under the rights and privileges afforded to every citizen under the United States Constitution,”
The Depositions
The deposition was set to question him around the accusation, that his company ‘The Trump Organisation’ misled lenders, insurers & tax authorities by providing false financial statements. He was to be deposed by lawyers from New York general attorney Letitia Jame’s office. It was a part of more than- three years of a civil investigation.
The scheduled deposition came during an overwhelming legal week for Donald Trump, as on Monday FBI conducted a raid at his primary residence Mar-a-Lago in Florida.
The search was in connection to another investigation into the handling of classified documents during his presidential period. After, on Tuesday a federal court denied his appeal to block a House Committee from obtaining his tax returns.
The former President said earlier this week that he is being ‘witch-hunted’ by the “radical left” to stop him from running in the Presidential elections of 2024. He also said that the justice system is weaponized against him & all these raids are “not necessary & inappropriate.”
Donald Trump & His Advisors
The advisors of the former President, have been advising him in a perplexing way as some have advised him to avoid the questions as it could lead him to face legal jeopardy. While others told him to answer seeing into the older testimonies he had made about his financial statements.
Also not answering could raise public eyes on him keeping in mind the coming 2024 presidential elections.
One of the people familiar with the case told CNN that after the statement he made in Iowa in 2016, where he cognitively compared the use of the Fifth Amendment to being questionable & even guilty, he has to be conscious of how he uses the same rights about which he was thinking otherwise previously.
