Mahesh Naryanan’s critically acclaimed movie “Ariyippu” rights acquired by Netflix.
The film, titled ‘Ariyippu’ or ‘Declaration’ in English, premiered at the 75th Locarno film festival, making history as the first Indian film to premiere in the festival in 17 years. It is also set to screen at the International Film Festival held in Busan.
This Malayalam film stars Kunchako Boban as Hareesh and Divya Prabha as Resmi in the lead as a couple who migrated to New Delhi from Kerala during the COVID-19 lockdown to work in a glove making factory while they wait for their passports to go abroad. However, their plans go sour when a manipulative video gets leaked, which causes hurdles in the couple’s marriage and their occupations.
The movie is greatly influenced by the lives that were impacted by the pandemic and the subsequent lockdown that followed and focuses on the decisions that people had to make during those times.
The film is set to premiere on Netflix after its festival run.
The film has been nominated for Asia Pacific Screen Awards and is currently screening at the British Film Institute Film Festival in London, the Hong Kong Asian Film Festival and Marrakech International Festival.
Mahesh Narayanan is one of the leading figures in the Renaissance movement in Indian cinema, working in the Malayalam, Tamil and Hindi film industries, and has also played an integral role in the new-generation movie era in Malayalam cinema in the early years of 2010 with movies like Beautiful (2011), Traffic (2011), Kanyaka Talkies (2013), Ennu Ninte Moideen (2015), Mili (2015), and Kamal Hassan’s Vishwaroopam (2013).
Mahesh’s directorial debut, Take Off (2017), which also features Kunchako Boban in a pivotal role, gained immense praise from both critics and audiences alike. His next film, C U Soon (2020), was an experimental project completely shot indoors in an apartment and was released via OTT on Amazon Prime Video was also well received by the audience and critics as it was shot mostly on an iPhone.
Asking about the film’s release on Netflix, Mahesh commented that he was extremely happy that his film would get exposure to a global audience from over 190 countries worldwide through the platform. Netflix India’s Vice President for Content says that they are really looking forward to bringing powerful, compelling, and entertaining stories to the audience and is certain that “Ariyippu” will certainly win over the viewer’s hearts as Minnal Murali did the previous year.
