The U-17 FIFA Women’s World Cup in India will have the VAR system which will be introduced in this tournament.
The Women’s U-17 World Cup which is just around the corner will witness the VAR (Virtual Assistant Referee) technology making its debut in the tournament which was announced by FIFA on Tuesday.
The prestigious tournament was finalized before FIFA canceled the 11-day suspension of the All-India Football Federation (AIFF), the tournament is set to be held from October 11th to 30th in places like Bhuvneshwar’s Kalinga Stadium, Margao’s JLN Stadium, and Navi Mumbai’s DY Patil Stadium.
Kari Seitz, the Head of FIFA Women Referring, stated that the tournament will give them importance and insights into the qualities of the match officials who are assigned for the job. They also said that they are very happy that the VAR technology will be used first time in the FIFA U-17 World Cup.
She also mentioned that the tournament will be an opportunity to show the skill decisions made by the VAR which will continue the development of their female VAR as part of the Road to Australia/New Zealand 2024 project.
The VAR technology supports decision-making process made by the referees in game-changing scenarios like any kind of offense leading up to the goal, penalty decisions, any offense leading to a penalty, incidents like a direct red card, and any mistake identification.
Alongside VAR there is a VAR team that constantly checks the errors related to the four game-changing decisions. It also communicates with the referee to check any kind of errors made by the referee during the match or any kind of serious missed decisions.
Apart from the U-20 Women’s World Cup in Costa Rica in 2022 and FIFA Women’s World Cup, it will be the third time the VAR technology will be used in a FIFA Women’s tournament.
The VAR will be used in India again for the second time the first one was when India hosted the AFC Women’s Asian Cup in January- February this year.
The tournament will comprise 14 women referees and 28 women assistant referees along with three support referees and 16 video match officials.
The Chairman of FIFA Referee’s committee Pierluigi Collina said that they are delighted for FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup to be back after the chaos happened due to the pandemic and they are looking forward to this tournament being held in India.
