On Friday, NIA [The National Investigation Agency] filed a charge sheet against five suspected Khalistani operatives. They are charged in a case of smuggling arms and narcotics across the border via drones.
The said accused are all residents of Punjab. Gurmukh Singh, Gagandeep Singh, Harmesh Singh, Darvesh Singh, and Lakhbir Singh Rode –the charge sheet has been filed against them.
As per the NIA, the absconding accused, Lakhbir Singh Rode ISYF Chief, banned terrorist organization sent these illegal consignments via drones from Pakistan. It is sent from him and his associates.
The NIA said in a statement, “Investigation has revealed that the charge-sheeted accused persons had smuggled illegal consignments of arms, ammunition, explosives and narcotics from across the India-Pakistan border to carry out terror activities in India”.
Further the team added “These consignments were received by co-accused and further discreetly passed on to other accused persons involved in the conspiracy to carry out subversive activities in India. Incriminating pieces of evidence have been found against all the charge-sheeted accused persons”.
Previously the case was registered on August 8 last year, at Mamdot police station in Punjab’s Ferozepur. In November last year, the case was taken over by NIA.
Eventually, Lakhbir Singh Rode is also being investigated in connection with the 2020 killing of Comrade Balwinder Singh Sandhu in Punjab’s Tarn Taran district.
On October 16, 2020, Shaurya Chakra was the recipient for fighting militancy in Punjab. Two unidentified bikers gunned down Sandhu at his home in Tarn Taran’s Bhikhiwind.
After the two months of attack took place the security cover of Sandhu (62) was removed by the state government.
The NIA had said in a statement then, “During the initial investigation by the Punjab Police, it was revealed that the killing was executed under a conspiracy hatched by Pakistan-based Khalistani terrorist Lakhbir Singh Rode and his handlers in the Pakistan intelligence agency, ISI.
The killing of Comrade Singh was executed through one Sukhmeet Pal Singh alias Sukh Bhikariwal from Gurdaspur district, who is a gangster-turned-terrorist”.
