According to a provincial official and a village elder, a heavy flood caused by seasonal rains in the eastern part of the country overnight killed at least nine people, swept away homes, and destroyed livestock and agricultural land. An Associated Press video showed villagers cleaning up after the flooding in the Khushi district of Logar province, south of the Afghan capital of Kabul, with their damaged homes in disarray. According to Abdullah Mufaker, the head of Logar province’s Natural Disaster Management Ministry, it is still unknown how many people were killed or injured by the rising waters, but at least nine people died.
“For the time being, the exact number is unknown, and people have gone to remove the dead bodies,” he explained. According to Del Agha, a village elder, the flooding was unprecedented in Khushi’s history. “It annihilated all the people’s animals, houses, and agricultural lands,” he explained. “People have fled to the mountains because they are homeless.” Heavy rains triggered flash floods in “Northern Afghanistan” last week, killing at least 31 people and leaving dozens more missing.
