How did it happen?
One of the world’s largest rivers, the Brahmaputra, which flows into India and neighboring Bangladesh from Tibet, burst its banks in Assam over the past three days, affecting more than 1900 villages.
Torrential rains lashed most of the rugged state, and the downpour continued on Wednesday with more forecast over the next two days. “Floods hit North East India”.
What rescue operations have been done?
Soldiers of the Indian Army retrieved more than 2000 people trapped in the district of Hojai in a rescue effort that continues, according to the state’s health Minister, Keshab Mahanta.

How is the Situation,?
“The situation remains extremely grave in the worst hit Dima Hasao district, with both rail and road links snapped due to flooding and landslides”, said Assam’s revenue Minister, JogenMohan, who is overseeing relief efforts there.
Meanwhile, cities elsewhere in India, notably the capital, New Delhi, are broiling in a heat wa e that has engulfed much of South Asia.
The flood situation is not expected to improve anytime soon because rainfall activity will continue over Upper Assam as well, on either side of Brahmaputra. Water bodies including Brahmaputra and It’s tributaries will continue to rise as the rainfall will be seen on either side of the Brahmaputra river.
Flood situation in Assam will continue to remain grim for atleast the next two or three days.
Assam State Disaster Management Authority said that at present 1413 villages are under water and Nagaon is the worst hit district where 2.88 lakh people are reeling under the calamity.In Cachar nearly 12 lakh people and in Hojai more than 1.07 lakh people were affected.
Authorities are running 248 relief camps and distribution centres in 14 districts, where 48, 304 people, including 6,911 children, have taken refuge.

They have distributed 2,26422 quintals of rice, day and salt, 5,997.48 litres of mustard oil, 2,393.84 quintana of cattle feed and other flood relief items it said
A bulletin said that the Army, paramitary force, NDRF, SDRF, civil administration, trained volunteers, fire and emergency services and local people have evacuated 8,066 persons from various flood hit parts of the state by deploying boats and helicopters.
