Former Kerala MLA and Janapaksham Party leader, PC George was granted bail on Sunday after being arrested for his alleged controversial remarks against the Muslim community. The former Congress leader was arrested from his residence in Kottayam district by the Kerala police. He has represented the Poonjar Assembly for 33 years. Â
The BJP backed Plathottahil Chacko George when Thiruvanthapuram Fort police had arrested him, in the early hours of Sunday. The police registered the case under non-bailable Section 153A of IPC for causing unrest between two communities that could lead to 3 years of jail time. Police also slapped an additional charge under Section 295A on him. Â
Since it was a public holiday, George was presented before the Judicial First-Class Magistrate at his residence. Police in the remand sheet requested 14-days custody, but the magistrate turned it down, and PC George instead received bail. The Magistrate released him subject to special conditions that he shall not influence any witness, interfere in the investigation, make any hate speeches, or get involved in any kind of controversies. Â
The case against PC George was filed by Muslim Youth League State President P K Firos to Kerala State Chief Anil Kant and Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. The complaint said that the speech by PC George at Ananthapuri Maha Sammelan said that Muslims sold tea altered with drugs causing impotence to non-Muslims people and turning them infertile to seize the population in the country. He further urged non-Muslims to boycott restaurants and businesses run by Muslims. Â
Under the direction of Kant, a case was registered by the Fort Police, who took Suo moto action against the former legislator. PC George had sparked quite a controversy, and visuals aired by TV News Channels showed how protestors were throwing rotten eggs at him. However, after getting the bail, PC George said that he is sticking to his statements in his interview with the media. Â
