Chun Woo Won the grandson of former South Korean president Chun Doo Hwan was admitted to hospital this Thursday after You tube broadcast. After waking up from unconsciousness he became a Whistle blower of his family. He brought out the crimes done inside his family to public.
He alleged that his family members have been living on illicit funds and have committed many crimes and that his grandfather was a ‘slaughterer’.
Chun Woo Won declared, “I BELIEVE MY GRANDFATHER IS A SLAUGHTERER, NOT A PERSON WHO DEFENDED HIS COUNTRY.”
ABOUT CHUN DOO HWAN
He is recognised as the country’s first military dictator with an iron hand who ruled it from 1980 to 1988. Chun’s military brutally put down its civilians protest against its rule during Gwangju Democratic Uprising in may 1980. According to government data these protests resulted in 127 injuries and 144 deaths of civilians. These numbers are however hotly contested. The Chun Doo Hwan administrators’ detractors and foreign press sources have claimed that the actual death toll rate was closer to 1000-2000.
But Chun’s misdeeds went beyond simply being political repression. He was sentenced to death in 1997 after the Supreme Court judged him guilty of treason, bribery, and other offences. He eventually received a presidential pardon and was freed from prison when the sentence was later commuted to life in prison. After Chun was freed, he was told to lose [KRW] 220 billion for accumulating slush funds, but the former dictator objected, saying he only had [KRW] 290,00 [KRW] to his name. As he passed away in November 2021 at the age of 90, state prosecutors were only able to recover [KRW]127.9 billion[/KRW], or 58% of the total forfeit, as of last October.
However, Chun Woo Won’s recent revelations have brought new attention to the case, as they directly contradict Chun Doo Hwan’s poverty claim. On March15, the former dictator’s 27-year-old grandson went on a posting spree, claiming that his entire family has been living in luxury thanks to his grandfather’s vast slush funds. He also claimed that the slush funds could still be found at the Yeonhui-dong home of Chun Doo Hwan’s widow, Lee Soon Ja.
He said that his uncle’s likely received considerably higher pay-outs. In some of the videos he released, Chun Woo Won made derogatory remarks about his father and grandma. He said that he had also tried to take his own life to repent for the sins and pains his family did.
Woo Won’s father, Chun Jae Young, denied all of his allegations, claiming that Woo Won was ill and that it was his own fault for not being able to take better care of him. However, Woo Won submitted documentation of his medical care proving that he was well enough to work, foreseeing that his family would probably assert that he was mentally incompetent. He disclosed that he was employed by EY’s strategy consulting division in New York.
At 4 p.m. on March16, Chun declared he would “tell everything about his family in a live video on YouTube”. He apologised for the sins he and his family had committed throughout the show, after which he said he would give the public half of his wealth. He then gave $52,265 USD to UNICEF in real time. He also acknowledged using marijuana and LSD and declared that he would be the first to be jailed because he is also a criminal.
Chun Woo Won took a lot of guts to bring his families crimes in front of the world. Hoping for a speedy recovery so that he can live his life once again without feeling ashamed.
