Video footage reveals that they shout at him, with one officer seemingly drawing his gun. Tragically, the teenager is fatally shot in broad daylight.
Nael M, the identified teenager, reportedly disregarded a police instruction to bring his car to a halt on Tuesday.
Anonymous police sources initially provided accounts of the Tuesday events to the French news media, asserting that the driver had collided with the officers, prompting one of them to fire a shot. However, the emergence of a video on Twitter altered the narrative.
In France, the video footage, reportedly recorded by an eyewitness, depicted a scene where the car came to a halt while an officer on the driver’s side aimed a firearm towards the vehicle. As the car began to move again, a loud explosion was heard, causing the car to speed off and collide with a nearby sidewalk.
France’s Provocative Incident Fallout
The incident of the shooting, along with conflicting narratives about its cause, resulted in outbreaks of violence on the streets and drew criticism from French officials who typically refrain from acknowledging “police violence.”
The shooting exacerbated deep-seated grievances concerning the French police, who have been plagued by allegations of excessive force, particularly within the economically disadvantaged suburbs of Paris, where many residents come from immigrant backgrounds.
As the video circulated, President Emmanuel Macron denounced the shooting as “inexcusable.” In a show of respect, lawmakers observed a moment of silence for the teenager, identified simply as Nael M.
Prime Minister Élisabeth Borne, while acknowledging the dedication of officers and gendarmes “who are actively involved in daily operations,” expressed stark criticism by highlighting that the footage depicted an incident “that evidently does not align with the rules of engagement upheld by our police forces.”
In the western suburb of Paris, Nanterre, where the shooting took place, local prosecutors have launched a manslaughter investigation. The officer allegedly responsible for the teenager’s shooting has not been publicly named or charged, but is presently in custody for interrogation.
Despite the efforts of emergency services to revive the teenager at the scene, his life could not be saved, and he passed away shortly thereafter.
Local residents in France staged a protest outside the police headquarters, which escalated tensions significantly. As the day progressed on Tuesday, the situation intensified, with demonstrators setting fires, torching a car, vandalizing bus stops, and hurling firecrackers in the direction of the police, who retaliated with tear gas and dispersal grenades.
In France, approximately 40 cars were set ablaze by protesters. Furthermore, a City Hall annex located in Mantes-la-Jolie, a town situated west of Paris, was left in ruins. The French authorities reported the arrest of over 30 individuals in connection with these events.
