Ahead of the monsoon session lok sabha secretariat releases list of unparliamentary words.
The booklet released by the Lok sabha secretariat includes terms like ‘jumlajeevi’, ‘baal buddhi’, ‘covid spreader’ and ‘snoopgate’ and even some wonted words like ‘ashamed’, ‘abused’, ‘betrayed’, ‘corrupt’, ‘drama’, ‘hypocrisy’, and ‘incompetent’ will be considered as unparliamentary in both Lok sabha and Rajya sabha, according to a new booklet norm.
The words which are in common usage during debates or speech in both the houses, now totally prohibited for the MPs.
Unparliamentary words, phrases include English, Hindi
The list has both English and Hindi banned words. Some of the Hindi words are: ‘gaddar’, ‘girgit’, ‘Chamcha’, ‘chamchagiri’, ‘ghadiyali ansu’, ‘apmaan’, ‘asatya’, ‘ahankaar’, ‘kala din’, ‘kala bazaari’, and ‘khareed Farokht’. Whereas, English include some commonly used words like ‘disgrace’, ‘donkey’, ‘bloody’, ‘fudge’, ‘hooliganism’, ‘bloodshed’, ‘mislead’, ‘lie’, and ‘untrue’.
The MPs should keep in mind these words while speaking in the house. Otherwise, they will be expunged from the records of parliament. The move sparked strife and many MPs from the opposition take jibe at the ruling government. They alleged that the BJP don’t want the opposition desk to speak against them.
Series of tweets and reactions
Lambasting to the list, Trinamool congress member Derek O’Brien openly challenge the government to expel him and said he will continue to use all these words in parliament and keep “fighting for democracy”.
“Few days left for monsoon session. Ahead of that Gag order issued on MPs. Now we will not be allowed to use these basic words while delivering a speech in parliament. I will use all the words. Suspend me. Fighting for democracy.” Derek O’Brien tweeted.
“Baith jaiye, Baith jaiye. Prem se boliye. New list of unparliamentary words for Lok sabha and Rajya sabha does not include ‘Sanghi’. Basically, government has taken all words used by opposition to describe how BJP destroying india and banned them.”(sic)
Another TMC MP, Mahua Moitra tweeted,
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also take a dig at the recent list by posting an image on Twitter that described the word ‘unparliamentary’.
Talking to media, Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury questioned the government whether they have to enter the house wearing saffron. “Today they are saying certain words can’t be used. Tomorrow they will ask us to enter the premises in a saffron dress. We have a rules committee in parliament. They are making a second republic by bringing such rules”, (sic) said congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury.
All the tweets and reactions vividly showed red flag to the move and accused for using the power in a wrong way.
However, the Lok sabha Secretariat stated that the Rajya sabha chairman and the Lok sabha speaker would have the last word in expunging phrases and words and included a warning that some words could not be deemed unparliamentary unless read in conjunction with the other expressions spoken during the parliamentary proceedings.
