The Second day of the G20 Summit was a chaotic affair for the Indian delegation as many important events and Bilateral discussions were planned for the day. The day saw a hectic day of productivity for Prime Minister Narendra Modi representing India’s ties with Group 20.
The G20 Summit 2022 which was scheduled on 15th and 16th November in the beautiful island in Bali has shut its doors with India taking over the Presidency for 2024. After a fruitful discussions among the Group 20 countries on the first day, the day 2 flagged off with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other Supreme leaders of the Group 20 visiting a Mangrove forest in Bali. Delivering a message of tackling climate change together, the visit saw a success with India joining the Mangrove alliance.
Session on Digital Transformation
The session that was lined up for the day was about Digital Transformation at the G20 Summit saw an active participation and healthy discussion. Indian Prime Minister made remarks representing the Indian side on the topic. PM Modi addressing the members of the council said, “Digital Transformation is the most remarkable change of our times. Appropriate use of digital technologies can become a force multiplier in the decades-long global fight against poverty.”
“Digital solutions can also be helpful in the fight against Climate Change – as we all saw in the examples of remote-working and paperless green offices during Covid. But we will get these benefits only when Digital Access is truly inclusive, when the use of Digital Technology is really widespread. Unfortunately, till now we have seen this powerful tool only from the criteria of simple business, keeping this power tied in the books of profit and loss. The benefits of digital transformation should not be limited to a small part of mankind, it is the responsibility of us G-20 leaders.” PM Modi in his speech.
While addressing the other members, Prime Minister Modi also about mentioned India’s efforts on bringing a Digital Revolution by the usage of UPI payments in India.
“Last year, over 40 percent of the world’s real-time payment transactions took place through UPI. Similarly, we opened 460 million new bank accounts on the basis of digital identity, making India a global leader in financial inclusion today.”, Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Ending his remarks Prime Minister said that the principle “Data for Development” will be an integral part of the overall theme of the G20 Summit 2024 in India.
Meetings on the Sidelines
There were several meetings scheduled for Prime Minister Narendra Modi with his counterparts of the Group 20 Countries to discuss India’s bilateral relations with different countries.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had talks with the President of France Emmanuel Macron for a brief meeting over a work lunch. The duo made several discussions on how to increase defence and economic co operations between the two countries.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also had a brief discussion with the Prime Minister of Singapore Lee Hsien Loong. The two Prime Ministers interacted on India-Singapore ties in the areas of trade, fintech, green economy, skill development, digitalisation & sustainable growth. The meeting turned out to be fruitful for both the countries.
After meeting the newly elected British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak for the first time on the first day of the G20 Summit, The Indian Prime Minister took a chance to exchange views with him over India and UK’s ties on commerce and defence. This was the first official meeting scheduled between the two Prime Ministers after the recent turmoil of events in British Election last month.
PM Modi departs for India carrying India’s presidency
Prime Minister Narendra Modi made his departure back to India from the G20 Summit on Wednesday Evening itself. On his departure, the Indian Prime Minister took twitter to thank the Indonesian President, Government and the people for their warm hospitality.
Speaking of India’s Presidency of the G20 Summit 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted,”India will assume the G-20 Presidency for the coming year. Our agenda will be inclusive, ambitious, decisive and action-oriented. We will work to realise all aspects of our vision of ‘One Earth, One Family, One Future.’”
The G20 Summit 2024 is set to see sessions in various cities in India.
