Gujarat MLA and a major critic of Narendra Modi was arrested in Gujarat by the Assam police. The surprise arrest was accomplished following the complaint by the BJP leader from Assam.
Jignesh Mevani, the Gujarati MLA was later flown to Assam, where he was presented before Assam’s Kokrajhar court. He stated that his arrest is a part of some kind of ‘vendetta politics’, backed by the PMO.

The former journalist and lawyer activist turned MLA, Jignesh Mevani was arrested from his residence in Gujarat’s Palanpur. He is charged with criminal conspiracy, alleging the offences against religious sentiments. The charges include, offences related to place of worship, outraging religious feelings, and provocation that might lead to communal violence.
He was flown to Guwahati and then taken to a local court in Kokrajhar. The court has dismissed his bail plea, and Mevani will stay under police custody for 3 days.
The Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa, was asked to comment on the matter. Taking a dig at the MLA, he said, “I don’t know about the specifics of the case. Who will do vendetta politics against him? I don’t even know who Jignesh Mevani is.”
