An FIR was filed against former Indian hockey team captain and Olympian Sandeep Singh on Saturday evening at the Sector 26 police station. The minister denied the claims and called them unfounded.
Sandeep Singh, the Haryana Sports Minister, was arrested by Chandigarh police on Saturday for stalking, illegal confinement, sexual harassment, and criminal intimidation. A woman junior coach had reported him to the police the day before for allegedly harassing her in a sexual manner.
A case FIR dated December 31, 2022, under Sections 354, 354A, 354B, 342, and 506 of the IPC has been registered at Police Station Sector 26, Chandigarh, and is being investigated in the matter of a complaint made by a female coach of Haryana against Sports Minister Haryana, a police spokesperson said. A police report was made the next day after a junior athletics coach from the state made claims of sexual harassment against the minister on Thursday, December 29.
Sandeep Singh’s resignation
He resigned from his position and denied the accusations, calling them an effort to “malign his reputation.” “Attempts are being done to damage my reputation,” he stated. “I’m hoping that the baseless accusations made against me will be thoroughly investigated. I give the Chief Minister control of the Sports Department until the inquiry report is received” Haryana Minister Sandeep Singh stated.
About the complaint
The woman, a junior athlete coach, claimed that the minister harassed her from February to November of last year through repeated messages on social media, had touched her inappropriately, and threatened her in messages. She made these claims during a press conference earlier this month at the office of the opposition party Indian National Lok Dal (INLD).
The accused victim asked, during the press conference, that the Manohar Lal Khattar administration fire Sandeep Singh right now and form a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to look into the situation.
The woman told ANI on Sunday that after losing patience, she came up about the event to the public. The woman added, adding that she didn’t disclose the event earlier out of concern for a detrimental influence on the sports sector, “I am also a player, consider how much patience I would have to bear such awful behaviour of this individual from February till now.”
“I gave it my best effort. He intentionally set a situation where a girl approaches him right away,” she continued. She emphasised that it was only after losing patience that she began to open up to the world.
She resisted the need to speak up when asked about more victims, but eventually responded, “I have full hope that as soon as he resigns and is behind bars, those individuals will absolutely come forward.”She demanded harsh punishment for the minister, saying, “Everyone should know how an Olympic-level athlete misbehaved with another national-level athlete.”
Sandeep Singh, an Olympian and the minister of sports for Haryana, has rejected the accusations that the junior athlete’s coach made against him in response to a complaint from the female coach, the Chandigarh police have filed an FIR against the Haryana Sports Minister.
Singh, a talented drag-flicker, made history in 2004 by playing for the senior team of India in the renowned Sultan Azlan Shah Cup as the youngest player from his country. Singh established a new record in the same year by playing hockey for India at the Olympics at the youngest age possible in Athens.
Singh fulfilled all the BJP’s criteria while being quiet in the Assembly. He became the party’s Sikh face, and his popularity—a product of his athletic career—worked for it. Consequently, Singh was a lock to become the new sports minister after defeating Mandeep Singh of the Congress by more than 5,000 votes in 2019 and becoming the only athlete fielded by the BJP to prevail.
He has rarely been observed participating in debates in the Assembly unless they were related to his department.
