On Friday, 1st April 2022, the Delhi High Court, over the vandalism outside the residence of Delhi Chief Minister, Arvind Kejriwal, asked the Delhi police to file a status report on the matter. During the hearing of the case, the court said that the CCTV footage around Kejriwal’s residence must be preserved.
According to India, Today’s published file status report, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) North who was present in the courtroom, said that the CCTV footage from the cameras at the place of incident, arterial roads leading to the CM’s residence, and all the evidence relating to the case would be preserved and protected.
The Incident:
On Tuesday, 29th March 2022, over Delhi CM’s statement on the recently released movie The Kashmiri Files, a member of the BJP youth wing allegedly destroyed the properties and demonstrated a protest outside the CM’s residence. The police, on Wednesday, filed a case and arrested eight people on Thursday in connection to the incident.
Considering the security aspect, the bench said it is not inclined to share the report with the Petitioner AAP lawmaker Saurabh Bhardwaj. “Since it concerns the arrangement at the residence of Chief Minister, in view of an aspect of his security, we are not inclined to share the same with the petitioner. However, a copy of the report be sent to the CM secretariat in a sealed cover,” the court stated.
During the last hearing on May 17, the Delhi Police had apprised the Court that it had restricted protests at the Civil Lines Metro station, the area where Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s residence is located, and security has been tightened there.
On April 25, the court observed a serious lapse of security in the vandalism incident that happened outside the Chief Minister’s house and directed the Police Commissioner to look into the matter.
The bench had asked the police to file a further status report within two weeks, disclosing aspects with regard to the review of security arrangements and what further steps have been taken, so that such incidents don’t recur in the future.
