The Karnataka high court on Tuesday upholds the decision of the government to ban the wearing of hijab inside educational institutions. The court released a 129-page verdict quoting passages from Quran and other Islam books to substantiate its decision on wearing a hijab is not considered an essential religious practice. And the court also held that wearing a hijab inside classroom premises would counter the soul of the constitution, “positive secularism”.
The matter is likely to be appealed to the supreme court as the high court’s verdict was not satisfactory for the Muslim students.
Since the verdict was expected today, the schools and colleges at some areas were closed in the state and section 144 of the CrPC was imposed in districts like Shivamogga, Kalaburagi and Dharwad to prevent any kind of protest or unrest.
Ahead of the verdict, Muskan, a girl in a viral video shouting ‘Allahu Akbar’ against the saffron-clad, according to India Today, said that they trust the constitution and wait for the judgement. She also urged everyone to maintain peace and she also added that the counter-protesters are also her brothers
The BJP spokesperson, Malavika Avinash asked the students to go back to the classes since the matter has been resolved
Baswaraj Bommai, The CM of Karnataka said that it is a matter of the children’s future and there is nothing more important than education. He also added that peace and harmony must be maintained and asked the students to concentrate on their studies since the issue is settled.
According to India Today, Karnataka Education Minister, BC Nagesh said that the uniform is there to ensure all students feel equal, so no inferiority or superiority complex arises among young minds of the country.
Union Minister, Pralhad Joshi, Karnataka Minister, Sudhakar K, and various other BJP leaders welcomed the high court’s verdict.
While several others like former Chief Ministers of J&K Mehbooba Mufti and Omar Abdullah, member of Lok Sabha, Asaduddin Owaisi and Student Islamic Organisation were not satisfied with the verdict.
After the verdict, a group of 35 college students at Yadgiri district, Karnataka, boycotted a preparatory exam.
