President Biden condemned the latest Russian aerial strike across Ukraine, including its attack on the capital Kiev for the first time.
The US criticised the attack on Ukraine and commented that the attack was “brutal” and promised more aid, while the UN General Secretary, Antonio Guterres, remarked that he was deeply shocked.
The latest attacks were in retaliation to an explosion that caused a vital bridge that connected the Russian mainland to the controversial Crimean peninsula to be destroyed.
Ukrainian authorities say that 83 missiles were launched and they were able to shoot down 43 of them. In a video released by the government, President Volodymyr Zelensky said that the country cannot be intimidated and can only be more united.
The strike was carried out on Sunday night and hit key Ukrainian cities and mostly civilian areas in Lviv, Kharkiv, Dnipro, and Zaporizhzhya. According to the officials, the death toll was 14, with a large number of people suffering injuries. The residents of Kiev said that the attack was focused on non-military areas like parks, universities, and children’s playgrounds.
In his speech on Monday, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that high-powered long-range missiles have been fired from land, air, and sea onto Ukraine’s energy fields, military commands, and communication as part of the “continuing terrorist attack on our territory” and that Russia will respond in a severe manner to “the threat created for the Russian Federation”.
Ukrainian President Zelensky shared his outrage with a tweet comparing Russia to a terrorist state, while US President Biden remarked that these missile strikes show us the “utter brutality” and ” the illegal war on the Ukrainian people”.
In a conversation with Zelesky, Biden offered his condolences to the people killed and injured in the recent missile strikes and promised to provide Ukraine with the aid needed to defend itself from future attacks.
In a statement released by the US Secretary of State, Anthony Blinken, said that the recent Russian attacks present a moral issue to the world and that the international community should be responsible for proving that President Putin’s actions are unacceptable.
While on a call with the Ukrainian Foreign Minister, Dmytro Kuleba, Blinken praised the people of Ukraine’s spirit and commitment and vowed to provide “vital economic, humanitarian, and security assistance,” according to the spokesperson of the State Department, Ned Price.
The leaders of the US Army said that these attacks were similar to those carried out by the Russians in the initial stage of the invasion and further condemned the attacks on civilians and the critical infrastructure needed by the public.
