Recently a woman in Madhya Pradesh had to undergo 118 stitches on her face after a group of men attacked her with a paper cutter when she resisted the sexual assault.
Rape-related crimes have increased all over India and National crime records bureau (NCRB) data shows the same. Sexual assault, Eve teasing, and rapes have almost doubled in Delhi at 49.3 per 100,000. Goa documented the highest increase in crime against women in the last two decades. This recent incidence in Bhopal shows that much more needs to be done to reduce the crime against women in India.
National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB)’s recent report findings
Under NCRB’s recent report, in most cases, the offender was known to the victim. Only 10% of cases have completed trials by 2018 with acquittals in 73% of the cases. According to the report, 1,597,466 such crimes were reported in India from 2001 to 2018. Reporting of such cases depends on both the victim and the police who register the FIRs.
Professor Dr. Rakhi Dandona, chief author of the study says that there is a need for more data on the population level. This data will help better understand the burden of sexual crimes against women. The issue is the lack of data available as most of the women are scared to register the FIRs due to fear of being killed or assaulted.
