We have observed with alarm the reports of ballistic missile launches by the DPRK (Democratic People’s Republic of Korea),” India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Ruchira Kamboj, said on Wednesday during a UN Security Council discussion on the DPRK.
“These launches follow the DPRK’s intercontinental ballistic missile launch in March of this year, which was considered in this Council, as well as subsequent launches,” she said.
Later, U.S. Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield delivered a joint statement at the UN Security Council stakeout on North Korea’s ballistic missile launches on behalf of Albania, Brazil, France, India, Ireland, Japan, Norway, South Korea, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
“The United States, Albania, Brazil, France, India, Ireland, Japan, Norway, the Republic of Korea, the United Arab Emirates, and the United Kingdom strongly condemn the DPRK’s long-range ballistic missile launch over Japan” on October 4 and its seven other ballistic missile launches conducted since September 25, a joint statement said, adding that North Korea has launched more than 35 ballistic missiles this year alone.
The joint statement continued, “These launches violate multiple Security Council resolutions and represent a threat not only to the region but to the whole world community.”
North Korea completed its longest-ever weapons test on Tuesday, launching a nuclear-capable ballistic missile that might reach the U.S. Pacific territory of Guam.
In her remarks to the Council, Ms. Kamboj emphasized that these launches constitute a violation of Security Council resolutions pertaining to the DPRK and “threaten the peace and security of the area and beyond.”
India demanded the execution of all relevant UN Security Council resolutions pertaining to the DPRK and “reiterated the significance of addressing the proliferation of nuclear and missile technologies connected to the DPRK in our region.” These connections have a negative effect on regional peace and security, especially India.”
Ms. Kamboj asserted that the Global South has been disproportionately impacted by the current geopolitical scenario and associated issues. Therefore, it is essential to continue making every effort to preserve peace and stability.
