Indian Men’s Table tennis team defeated Singapore by 3-1 to become victorious in acquiring the gold medal. The achievement of winning the Gold medal is the second in a row, as Indian men’s table tennis earlier also won a yellow medal in 2018.
India beat Singapore in the Table Tennis final match to acquire the gold medal at Commonwealth Games 2022 organised in Birmingham, England on Tuesday.
In the final game, India beat Singapore by 3-1 to capture gold. In the group stage, India won by 3-0, however, the table was turned with the Singaporean player Clarence Chew who registered a victory over Sharath Kamal.
But, India was able to grab its CWG gold with G Sathiyan and Harmeet Desai who were able to defeat the opponent in both doubles and singles.
The Actual Tournament
The match was held step-wise. Harmeet Desai and G Sathiyan at the start unfolded a great game as India registered a win in the first round of the doubles match.
They both kick-started the game which also marked the beginning of table tennis.
The duo competed against teens Izaac Quek Yong and Pang Yew En Koen. In the start of the round, the game looked distant however the Indian pairs were able to give a tough fight to the teens in the second and third games.
India wins the first round by registering 13-11, 11-3, 11-5 wins.
In the Second round of the game, mature Sharath Kamal had a tough fight with Singaporean player Clarence Chew.
However, the Singaporean player Chew aced the match to avail for a tie in the match. Sharath could not get his rhythm back and lost even his third game in barely seven minutes of the play.
The two younger opponent players registered an easy fight over him making the score tally; 11-7, 12-14, 11-3, 11-4.
This conquest boosted the morale of Singapore and Pang came for the singles match.
First game between Sathiyan and Pang witnessed a tough close fight until Sathiyan won by 12-10 finally.
But, soon Pang registered a triumph in the second game by winning it by 7-11.
This gave an adrenaline rush to Sathiyan and support from the crowd and Indian team gave him a boost. He defeated Pang in the next two games. He gave a victorious score tally of 12-10, 7-11, 11-7, 11-4.
Now, the time came for Harmeet Desai to fight against the aced Singaporean player Chew in Singles.
However, the same excellence was not registered by Chew as Harmeet was easily able to ace over the player. He gave India a score tally of 11-8, 11-5, 11-6.
Both G Sathiyan and Harmeet Desai excelled in their Singles against the opponent team to confirm a yellow medal for India.
This last and also the final match of Harmeet Desai and Chew Zhe Yu Clarence seized the gold for India undoubtedly.
With this, India registers its victory over the opponent team members to grab a gold medal in the Commonwealth Games 2022 in men’s table tennis tournament.
GOLD- yet Again
This is the second time in a row that India became victorious in the team event of men’s table-tennis games.
Earlier in 2018 too, Indian men’s table tennis had won a yellow medal in the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games. The men’s table tennis team had defeated Nigeria by 3-0 to register a gold.
History of Table Tennis Association in India
Though the game of table tennis was started way back, it was in 1937 when the Table Tennis Federation commenced.
Formerly known as All-India Table Tennis Association (AITTA), was renamed as Table Tennis Federation of India post Independence.
It’s located in the city of Kolkata and is the only central authority for table tennis in India.
