India Wins In 3rd ODI vs West Indies in Trinidad, as Ishan Kishan led the way before captain Hardik Pandya took over.
India crushed the West Indies in the series-clinching third and final ODI at the Brian Lara Stadium in Tarouba, Trinidad, to win the three-match series 2-1. This was India’s 13th consecutive bilateral ODI series victory over the West Indies, breaking a world record. Since 2007, they have not lost an ODI series against the Windies. Pakistan is the next best, having won 11 consecutive ODI series against Zimbabwe. India’s 200-run triumph over the West Indies on Tuesday was also their second-largest ODI victory (in terms of runs).
The victory was set up by the batters after they smashed 351/5 led by Ishan Kishan, Shubman Gill, Sanju Samson and later Hardik Pandya. India were looking to avoid a first series defeat to the West Indies since 2006 and the visiting batters ended up giving them a significant advantage.
Kishan batted for 77 balls before succumbing to Yannic Cariah in the 20th over. On 143, his wicket ended his opening partnership with Shubman Gill. That was India’s biggest opening partnership in an ODI in the West Indies, and Kishan struck his third consecutive ODI half-century. As a result, he became the sixth Indian player to achieve 50 points or more in each of a three-match ODI series. Shreyas Iyer, who struck half-centuries in all three of India’s away matches against New Zealand in 2020, was the last guy to do so.
Krishnamachari Srikkanth was the first Indian batter to accomplish this milestone, accomplishing so against Sri Lanka in 1982. Dilip Vengsarkar followed suit against Sri Lanka in 1985, and Mohammad Azharuddin followed suit against the same opposition in 1993. No Indian has done it in the previous 26 years till MS Dhoni did it against Australia in 2019. Iyer and Kishan quickly followed.
India’s World Record Run In 3rd ODI vs West Indies
This was also India’s greatest ODI score in the West Indies, surpassing 339/6 on June 26, 2009. India won by 20 runs, with Shivnarine Chanderpaul getting the most runs for the hosts with 63 off 59 balls. Yuvraj Singh had struck a scorching 131 off 102 for India at the time, but no visiting batter scored a century on Tuesday. It was the most runs India have ever scored without a century from any of their batters, beating the previous best of 350/6 against Sri Lanka in Nagpur in 2005.
Instead, four of India’s top five batted for half-centuries, only the seventh time this has happened in ODI cricket. Kishan scored 77 off 64 balls, while Shubman Gill batted 85 off 92. Then Sanju Samson came in and hammered 51 off 41 balls. Hardik Pandya then maintained his undefeated record with a blazing 70 from 52 balls. Ruturaj Gaikwad, Sanju Samson, and Ravindra Jadeja were the only Indians who did not hit a half-century on Tuesday. Ruturaj Gaikwad fell on eight off 14, while Jadeja was undefeated on eight off seven as Pandya gave India a strong finish. Meanwhile, Suryakumar Yadav scored 35 off 30 before succumbing to Romario Shepherd.
West Indies responded by losing four wickets in 11 overs as Mukesh Kumar (3/30) made the new ball talk. Shardul Thakur then came in to pick up 4/37 for the hosts, who never recovered from their disastrous start. In 35.3 overs, India bowled the West Indies out for 151.
