On Wednesday the UN’s top court ordered Russia to suspend its invasion of Ukraine. The Court says it was “profoundly concerned” by Moscow’s use of force.
On 24th February, Kyiv pulled Moscow to the UN’s top court days after Russia’s attack. In its appeal ahead of the ICJ, Ukraine had claimed that Russia had explained the invasion of Ukraine that in eastern Ukraine in Luhansk and Donets, Russia falsely proclaimed genocide.
On 16th March 2022, the International Court of Justice has ordered Russia to straight away Drap the invasion of Ukraine. The Court also ordered that both parties must abstain from any acts which may provoke the dispute further.
While professing the final decision in the case, leading judge Joan Donoghue told the ICJ” The Russian Federation shall immediately suspend military operations that it commenced on 24 February on the territory of Ukraine.”
Justice Donoghue told a hearing in The Hague that, “The court is profoundly concerned about the use of force by the Russian Federation which raises very serious issues in international law.” International Court of Justice orders Russia to straight away stops the invasion of Ukraine.
The ICJ order against Russia was passed by 13-2 votes. The judges Russia and China have been cast two dissenting votes. While the Indian judge at ICJ Justice Dalveer Bhandari voted in Favour of the verdict asking Russia to stop its military operations in Ukraine.
Over a while, Justice Bhandari was nominated to the ICJ entirely for the support of the Indian government and various missions.
Justice Bhandari voting against Russia, though an independent movie based on his interpretation of the Russia-Ukraine issue, is different from what India’s official position has been indifferent international fora.
The press statement made by the International Court of Justice has also observed that it did not possess any evidence substantiating Russia’s claims that genocide had been committed by Ukraine in the Donbas region.
Meanwhile, the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) is scheduled to hold an extraordinary meeting today to discuss the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Ukraine.
