Suella Braverman wins the ‘Woman of the Year’ Award
The official ceremony of the 20th Asian Achievers Award (AAA) was held on 23rd of September 2022 in Central London.
The Asian Achievers Award is one of the most prestigious Asian awards in the United Kingdom. The purpose of this award is to address and acknowledge the achievements of the South Asian community of the UK.
South Asians in the UK today occupy leadership positions across a range of fields, including politics, business and civil society. The Asian Achievers Awards recognize the outstanding work of such individuals within the South Asian community.
Even though the awards ceremony is held annually every year since 2000, this time the event was dedicated to the late monarch of Britain, Queen Elizabeth ll.
Amongst many other categories was the category of Queen Elizabeth ll Award for the ‘Woman of the Year which is being awarded for the very first time.
The Queen Elizabeth ll Award for ‘Woman of the Year’ was awarded to UK’s current Home Minister under the governance of Prime Minister Liz Truss, Suella Braverman.
Suella Braverman is a 42-year-old Indian-origin UK Politician. She was born in London, UK to Indian descent parents Christie Fernandes and Uma Fernandes. She was selected for the Cabinet as the Secretary for Home Department by new British Prime Minister, Liz Truss.
Suella Braverman’s parents showed up to the ceremony on behalf of their daughter to receive the award.
Suella Braverman conveyed her gratitude by taking it to her official twitter. The barrister tweeted that she was honored to receive the award. There was an overall category of ten. There were other Indian-origin figures from different walks of life who won awards.
This becomes more special as Queen Elizabeth ll was awarded the ‘Woman of the Year’ in 1953 by TIME. Princess Elizabeth became the Queen of Britain in 1953 after her father King George Vl passed away. She was very young at that time.
Women like Suella is making Indians proud and is a proof of the heights that Indians are achieving globally.
