In the wake of the latest flare-up in the Ukraine crisis, Russia said on Wednesday that, while Western sanctions will cause fear and mistrust, affecting, among other things, the international banking system, Moscow will continue to implement its “big plans” in defense, with India as the only country that is “honest” in sharing technology with it.
India has not yet denounced Russia’s activities, and foreign minister S Jaishankar stated during a panel discussion in Paris on Tuesday that much of what is going on in Ukraine is a result of NATO expansion, as well as post-Soviet politics and Russia-West dynamics.
While others, such as Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi, blasted Russia for what the West regards as its military adventurism against Ukraine, Jaishankar wanted to focus on the danger posed by China to the “global commons” at the EU Indo-Pacific ministerial hosted by France.
Russian charge d’affaires Roman Babushkin said India is playing “a vital role of a global power” in the Security Council and that its activities fully reflect the “merit” of the India-Russia strategic partnership, while claiming that Moscow’s actions in recognising Ukraine’s breakaway regions are in line with international law.
Even as he indicated Moscow still prefers discussion to address the situation, Babushkin declared Russia was ready for any development, which might be a portent of things to come.
