Amidst the ongoing T20 Men’s World Cup, BCCI has announced the squad for the T20Is and ODIs for the upcoming India’s tour to New Zealand, commencing from November 18, right after the World Cup.
As BCCI has announced the squads, Hardik Pandya and Shikhar Dhawan have been named as the T20Is and ODIs captains respectively.
Who’s in and who’s not?Â
The captains of India’s T20I and ODI teams for the tour of India to New Zealand, which begins November 18, are Hardik Pandya and Shikhar Dhawan. Rishabh Pant, a wicketkeeper-batsman, has been named vice-captain of both squads as Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and KL Rahul have been rested. In a significant development, young pacer Umran Malik is making his return to the T20I setup. Dinesh Karthik and Mohammed Shami are the only other notable players absent, along with Kohli and Rohit, with Shubman Gill, Ishan Kishan, and Mohammed Siraj set to speed Team India into the new era.
Shreyas Iyer and Kuldeep Yadav are also back to the T20I fold. Kuldeep, a left-arm spin bowler, most recently competed at home against South Africa, when he made an impression with his wrist-spin, taking six wickets in three games, with a best of 4/18.
The renowned “Kul-Cha” reunion is slated to be released, as Yuzvendra Chahal is already a member of the squad. R Ashwin, India’s star spinner, has been benched. Iyer, meanwhile, was selected as a reserve for India’s T20 World Cup team and will aim to jumpstart his career when he travels to a nation where he did well on his previous visit. Even though India was defeated 0-3, Iyer still managed to hit 103, 52, and 62 runs in the three ODIs.
The best one, though, is Umran’s return. The 22-year-old pacing sensation, who was left out of India’s T20 World Cup lineup, will make a comeback after participating in just three matches for India, two of which were against Ireland and one against England. There was a lot of uproar over Umran’s potential worthiness of a spot in the World Cup team, but the selectors made a different decision. Umran, now has the opportunity to take on the BlackCaps batsmen in freezing New Zealand conditions which is all thanks to the outspoken backing of several famous fast bowlers, including Wasim Akram, Brett Lee, and Dale Steyn.
