Every year the 13th day of June is celebrated as the International Albinism Awareness Day. It aims to bring about awareness among the people and educate them about the human rights of the people suffering from albinism. This day first became official on 18th of December,2014, when the UN General Assembly embraced a resolution, and 13th of June was declared as the International albinism awareness day.
What exactly is albinism?
Albinism is a genetically inherited, non-contagious disease characterized by a lack of melanin in the skin, eyes, and hair. Albino people are predisposed to a variety of social and biological problems as a result of this. People who have a significant difference in pigmentation are more likely to get skin cancer. Many people suffer from permanent vision impairment as a result of a lack of melanin in their eyes. There is no present cure for this disease.
Furthermore, this disease is related with a significant amount of discrimination. People with albinism suffer a great deal socially as a result of a lack of awareness of their disease, and they are subjected to a variety of forms of discrimination, including disability discrimination.
Theme for the year 2022
There is a theme attached to this year’s celebration is “United in making our voices heard”. This theme is chosen due to several reasons; because including the voices of people with albinism is critical to ensuring equality #Inclusion4Equality; to celebrate how groups of people with albinism and individuals increase the visibility of people with albinism in all domains of life; to encourage and celebrate unity among people with albinism; to amplify the voices and visibility of people with albinism in all areas of life; and to highlight the work being done by albinism groups around the world.
